About
Getaway Sailing on the Gold Coast provides a unique sailing experience, as the only sailboat Whale Watching Cruise to see whales up-close in their habitat during migrating season. Avoid the crowds, as we are not your average tour operator and join us on a private charter with your family or friends and enjoy the whales 2-3 times longer than other cruises. We offer an exclusive private charter during which you feel you have your own private yacht. Enjoy the silence of a sailboat over the pacific ocean with the elegant humpback whales. Alternatively we offer a range of sailing packages that may also suit your needs. From Twilight Sunset Cruises to a Discovery Tour of South Stradbroke Island – all under sail, or perhaps a Lunch Cruise to Tipplers sailing up past the Efron and Sovereign Islands towards the national parks of South Stradbroke Island. All of our cruise bookings are exclusive and private for you and your guests only!

Had the best sailing day out with Grant enjoying the beautiful migrating whales. We went with Darryl a few years ago and had a brilliant time so are happy this business is up and running again. Grant shared with us that Darryl's sister and brother-in-law have bought the business and are continuing the same sailing experiences. Grant is their 30+ years skipper!! Can highly recommend this business to anyone who just wants to enjoy some sailing on the Broadwater or offshore with the whales like my family did.
We went out whale watching and were not disappointed!! Grant got us close enough to the whales that they just seemed to swim alongside or near to us, as we sailed in the same direction. Brilliant day out and would recommend to anyone who wants a fun and/or chilled day out! Thanks Grant.

What a great day out! We booked for the 3 of us and had the whole boat to ourselves. It was a beautiful sunny day and nothing was too much trouble. Very personalised tour! Thank you so much!

We booked our trip at the end of the season so weren't guaranteed to see any whales, but Darryl spotted a mother and calf fairly quickly and we were able to watch them slowly cruising south for hours. Darryl was very informative and a great host. The boat is lovely - clean, well kept, and comfortable (there were 6 of us). We thoroughly enjoyed our day and we'll definitely be booking with Darryl earlier in the season next year.

What a day. We were a group of 4 and had the whole boat to ourselves. Darryl was so informative and had our attention right from the start. We had a relaxing time sailing on the coral sea lounging on the bean bag at the front of the boat. Darryl guaranteed us whales and wow did we see whales. Many whales. What beautiful creatures they are. I would like to thank Darryl for one of the best days I have had. I would not hesitate recommending this tour to anyone.

The humpbacks are the diamonds in the sea. They are a wonder to us humans, with their size and grace. It is always a pleasure to give guests the spectacular view of the whales in their natural habitat. My job is easy when you have a staring cast of humpback whales. Hope to see you again sometime Julie.

We had the boat to ourselves and sailed alongside whale pods travelling north. Darryl was a fantastic host seeing to everyone’s needs and is so informative about whale behaviour & history. We took a picnic lunch onboard & celebrated my partner’s birthday surprise. Maximum of 6 on boat so very personal & a perfect mix of sailing & whale watching.

Thank you for the kind review. We are close to the middle of the annual humpback migration here on the Gold Coast. here are many whales passing the Gold Coast beaches every day, I have now scene a couple of pods heading south towards their feeding grounds for summer. Next we have the mating season here.
Hope to see you again on another whale watching memory

What a great time we had with Darrel from Getaway. His knowledge of the local area and whales was autstanding. Highly recommended. We did this trip and year when we visited the Gold Coast and have added it again for our holiday next year

We spent the morning sailing off Stradbroke Island on the Broadwater. We decided on the introduction to sailing so it was all hands on deck. Darryl was amazing how he taught us the basics and let us take control of his boat. Not only was he a great skipper but a great companion to our group. There was also peaceful quiet times sitting at the front of the yacht in a bean bag soaking up the beauty & nature. Darryl has ignited a sailing passion within us and we will definitely be back as we would like to experience the whale watching. I can highly recommend Getaway Sailing as an amazing day out on the water on the Gold Coast.

The day flew by and the whales were all around. Even though we went out near the end of the "season," Skipper Darryl was spot on with finding mothers and their calves. We had time to watch the whales under sail and we drifted with them as well.
What a fantastic day and great value! Highly recommended for couples and families to see the whales in their element with a private experience.

Although at the end of the humpback migration on the Gold Coast we were treated to many different pods of whales. The season seems to be lengthening each year with massive population growth of humpback whales on the east Australian coast migration. Thank you for the kind review and I hope to see you out with the whales another day.

The Gold Coast whale watching season runs from June to October with thousands of humpback whales gliding past the beaches of the Gold Coast and South Stradbroke island. This season (2016) has been the largest number of whales I have seen in seven years of cruising the Gold Coast water ways.

Thank you for the enquiry. I have found that the sailing whale watching experience I provide is not suitable for children under 12 years of age. The length of time on the water is to long for them. I would enquiry with another whale watching operator
Kind regards
Darryl
