Great History

A great way to increase your knowledge of the Civil War and what part the Rock Island Arsenal played during that time period.

For historians, especially gun-lovers, a stroll through the Rock Island Arsenal Museum is like dying and going to heaven. Opened to the public in 1905, it is the second oldest U.S. Army museum, next to the West Point Museum that opened in 1857 at the U.S. Military Academy. Its primary mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of... More

This is an historic installation. The museum is great and the outdoor exhibits of artillery, rockets, transporters etc. is really informative.

We are local but decided to do some back yard vacation ideas. It is a little harder to get on the island now than it was before but this little gem is worth the stop. Not huge but takes about 30 mins to look through it.

Go onto the base through the Moline Gate. You'll need to process through the visitor's center, make sure you read the display board add you walk in. You will lose at least 15 minutes being processed in. The museum has a great history, amazing variety of arms, and friendly staff. Spend some time going around the base to the other... More

My son took me to see the museum which he has visited many times as he is based there. I am not a exactly fascinated with hand guns, but I found this collection(which if I recall correctly, is the largest in the US) to be very interesting and very well done. There were also examples of all of the different... More

I went there expecting to see how they made munitions. They don't make munitions, they make recoil mechanisms and gear to transport big guns. The museum had some places where it felt like they were preserving items just to say they had a museum, for instance, hey had a desk from the production floor of when they made other items.... More

Security has made this a challenge to get to, but the collection is fabulous and well-displayed and interpreted.

This museum gives a lot of the history of Rock Island Arsenal, including examples of the many things manufactured there.
