- GunjanHyderabad, India19 contributionsTranquilityIt's a beautiful Hindu temple. It has various statues of Hindu Gods. Pls make sure this place is in your itinerary when you visit Mauritius. The driver to this place is also really beautiful. There is a beautiful lake which gives a sense of calmness and peace. The temple priest gave us blessings and also gave us information about the entire area. I totally loved the experience.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023
- milcvNottingham, United Kingdom398 contributionsPeaceful place of worship and reflectionWe went to the grand bassin to visit ganga talao and see the beautiful lake, temples and worship taking place. The large Shiva deity statues were under a small amount of restoration work when I visited, but still very impressive. The lakes and surrounding temples are beautiful and clearly hold great revenants to the people coming to worship. The main temple near the lake offers blessings to all and was very welcoming, but do take note of the dress code for this holy place. The climb to the top of the hill to the Hanuman deity is well worth the effort for a wonderful view. A very kind worshiper told us this deity is placed at the top of the hill so that when people climb it they are showing devotion which the deity Hanuman is a representative of.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 November 2023

Had our wires crossed on this visit as I had a very different idea as to what the Grand Bassin was? Turns out it is a good spot to visit, just not VG! But I would keep well away from the place during a religious holiday as it caters for thousands of the faithful. Two huge statues of Hindu deity dominates the top of the hill. While further down there is a huge collection of different temples around a large lake where rites are carried out for the departed. Worth a quick look but very busy!

The Grand Bassin temple is imbued with spirituality that we feel throughout our visit. The sacred lake, where swimming is prohibited, brings a certain harmony to the whole. Do not hesitate to take the stairs on the right, which lead to the view point of the lake, the temples and various statues built here and there.
There are many macaques all around but they are not aggressive, they bring a smile to visitors.
Concerning the two monumental statues and small temples which are either before or after the main temple (it all depends in which direction you are driving), do not hesitate to stop there. There are large parking lots and the people who welcome you will be happy to attach a bracelet to your wrist and thus grant you the blessing of the Hindu protective gods.
Definitely a place to go if you're in the area. Allow 1 hour in total if you take your time.

We hired a car and visited these temples the same day as various other attractions in the central / south-west part of the island.
Probably a must do if you are of that religion. A nice to see for others. It's a nice place to wander around, feels very spiritual.
It doesn't cost anything, and there are monkeys, huge statues (Shiva and so on), and a shallow lake.

We are not religious at all but found this stop on a trip to be quite peaceful. You are invited to have a blessing and will be painted in the forehead with a symbol during this. There are some lovely things to see and it is nice to see Hindu families with their children partaking in the religious activities.

The place exudes spirituality. Maybe because we visited it on a rainy day, in the afternoon, with very few people carrying out their rites, in a magical silence broken only sometimes by a background of sacred music but our small group was fascinated by the lake, by the mysticism that exudes, from the statues and their meanings. For us it's a must see!

5/5 visit. Super special memory. The temples were beautiful and spotless and clean. The monkeys were great to see, we loved being able to visit inside of the temple, this was really special. Thank you for everything!

When my guide told me of this place, I hadnt expected it to exceed my expectations but it did much beyond that. The cool calm at the hill top, the regular chanting resonating through the surrounding natural vista, the smell of the incense sticks in the air all contributed to a very satisfying visit. I watched as the devotees offered their prayers and took part in their ambulation on-site. I could easily spend a couple of hours here and wouldnt be the worse for it. Come a bit early and you will have the place almost to yourself. So peaceful! And kudos to the Mauritian religious harmony.

Oui , nous avons visité le jour après le festival de Shivaratri (300.000 pèlerins). A ces moments, le trafic routier est très congestionné. Shivatratri se produit fin février.
