Nice walk, but most buildings are not open. The ones that are you can only view from the doorway. Better villages elsewhere in the country. Skip this one. Donation requested. Free parking.

Interesting to think that Lincoln and the other villagers that were here in the 1830's all ended up coming from other places to settle for a few years and then disappear. This is the place that was a "turning point" for Lincoln, as the museum...More

I go fairly often to new salem due to having grown up in Menard County. The states budget woes have resulted in buildings not being as well maintained as they once were, but it’s a beautiful place wander in Abraham Lincolns footsteps. A lot of...More

Visited on a cold November day. 24 cabins built during the depression to faithfully copy the original New Salem village where Lincoln lived for several years. Great attention to detail. Visitor center is informative. This is especially good for Lincoln aficionados.

This is the place where Lincoln spent his early adult years, filling many jobs in this small village. It was abandoned in the 1840s, not long after Lincoln left to begin his political career in Springfield. The majority of the town was reconstructed by the...More

If you are on a tour of Lincoln historical sites, I recommend you add Lincoln's New Salem to your list. Lincoln lived here in his 20's and they say it was a formative time of his life, so it's great that they have recreated the...More

The historic village contains many buildings of Lincoln's time, including two stores in which he worked and ran a business. It is worth a trip to this exhibit to see how life was back in those days in Illinois (pretty rough, it seems), and also...More

Most recreated or restored villages are of large downtowns or of originals moved and grouped in a park setting. This is a 1930s Civilian Conservation Corp recreation of the village of New Salem recreated on the original foundations. It represents the Village of New Salem...More
