Really enjoyed visiting New Salem! Fun to feel like we were back in the era of Lincoln! Had fun watching them spin yarn from wool and dye it! Also impressed by how much everyone knew. Had kids ages 10, 7, 5, 2, 1. Great to...More

Lincoln's New Salem offers an illuminating view of Lincoln's early adulthood and of how he came to choose law and politics for a career. We visited early enough in the year that there were not a lot of docents on duty yet, but it was...More

If you are a Lincoln nerd/history buff of that era, this place is really cool. There is a visitor center that plays you a movie about the place, and volunteers in period costumes showing you how they lived in the village. I can see how...More

We took our son when he was younger and he was shocked about having to draw water, no toilets and how hard it was on everyone especially the parents.

Excellent glimpse of Lincoln as a young man in his 20's shown through the village he lived in. Very interesting rebuilt log structures, homes, shops, mill , etc. Simply amazing that he would be President 30 years later! Extremely helpful and informative staff!

My family enjoyed walking around New Salem and seeing what it looked like when Abe Lincoln lived there. It was really interesting to go inside actual homes and see what they looked like and how the people lived. It was nice that there were people...More

It rained pretty good the day we went here. You enter at the visitor center. There's a Conestoga wagon above the desk supposedly built by Emanuel Custer, the infamous George's father. There's some really interesting exhibits and a frat 15 minute video about how New...More

The website stated they were open on Sundays. The visitor center was open as was the cafe. None of the other buildings were open including the museum, gift shop and mill. I felt like we really didn't get to see anything of interest. Once you...More

There used to be a resturant across the street and on top of the hill. Was family oriented - home cooked style food with a gift shop. It is still there?

The village is right next to the parking lot. I don't know exactly how long the village itself is. You can stop at each house/building and read about what it was used for. We went off season, so none of the buildings were... More

A little late to the party with my answer, but as others have mentioned, it would be good to plan on a few hours. You can see it in less time, but there are a lot of cabins with information to read about each. I also agree... More
