Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a must-do day trip from Swakopmund. Photos don't do it justice and it is quite a spectacular sight. Be sure to visit Goanikontes Oasis Rest Camp nearby for lunch in their amazing kid-friendly restaurant.

First things first: You need a permit that can painlessly be obtained at the MET or NWR offices. It is N$10 per person for Namibians and N$30 otherwise + N$10 per vehicle, which is really not a lot. It is about 30 km from Swakopmund and can be easily reached in a sedan. We packed a picnic basket and enjoyed the sunrise at about 7h30. It really is a spectacular sight. If you wish to spend some more time in this lunar landscape, continue a further 4 km from the viewpoint to Goanikontes Oasis that now has new owners. You can continue further on the Welwitschia tour or turn back to Swakopmund if you have other activities planned in the afternoon.

After 20 years I returned to the Moon landscape and was even more stunned than the 1st time. This is such a unique and amazing landscape. It kind of take's one's breath away.
We got our one day permit in the morning and set off at around 10.30am. The road is good and one reaches the viewpoint after about 30-40mins. When we got our permit, we were given a map and a paper with the beacons one passes on the way and an explanation for each one.
The different rock colours, the lichen which look like soil but are actually there to protect the soil from erosion, the coin bushes, the ink bushes, the tracks of ox carts still remaining after 100 yrs, all so very interesting. On seeing the vastness and the beauty of the landscape, one appreciates even more the importance of protecting it and keeping it as it is. As the lichen grow less than 1mm a year, it cannot be stressed enough how detrimental it is for this landscape to drive off road. And, yet one is amazed to STILL see car tracks!!!
After the moon landscape viewpoint there is a T junction and if one turns left and drives 3kms, one comes to Goanikontes oasis...a great place for a coffee, cake or even a light meal. It's a paradise for families with children, with it's little zoo and swings and all kinds of creatures running around..
If one carries on, one eventually reaches the 1500yr old Welwitschia plant. It's not just the plant that is worth seeing, but, the whole drive is an amazing experience. We loved the scenery, the emptiness of the desert and then the green vegetation on the dry Swakop river bed, the many smaller Welwitschia plants, the large herd of springbok, the rock cliff formations...all stunning. Even the extreme sense of desolation is awe inspiring.
We did the whole drive, took many photos, had coffee and cake at Goanikontes. the whole trip took us 6 hrs.

To see the moonscape is just incredible! It is something that you will not see anywhere else. (i think) A really must see! Remember you need a permit to go into the area which we bought in town the day before, although nobody checked or asked for our permit. (No staff or access control gates) We combined moonscape with Welwitschia but we could not appreciate the Welwitschia. It is far out, the road was terrible bumpy and for us, it was not worth it.

Its easy to see the moon landscape in conjunction with Welwitschia drive. To do both it takes about 3 hours with stops covering a round trip of approx 160 km from Swakopmund. You take the B2 toward Usakos and then after 10 Km turn onto the D1991 which has a wooden sign at the junction.
You are supposed to have a permit which can be easily purchased from NWR office in Swakopmund for 50 NAD. The office was open even on Sunday. However, when I went there was no one present to check but by buying the permit you get a map and fact sheet of the stopping points / beacons marked along the route with small piles of stones or signs which provide more information.
I have to say the view of the landscape is incredible which certainly lives up to its name! The Welwitschia plants are a further drive along but less visually remarkable but incredible when understanding their biology as living fossils with some up to 2000 years old!

It was a perfect day to visit the replica of the moon in the Namib desert, the clear sky and cool morning wind contributed to a stunning view.

This is one of the "Must See" sceneries in glorious Namibia.
The absoluut sense of desolation leaves you in awe of nature. It definitely has an other worldly feel to it.
This landscape is but only one of the many unique landscapes of Namibia, the country has the oldest desert in the world - the Namib desert, the latter can be visited in the Namib Naukuft National Park.
Unique 4x4 trips into the desert with specialized tour operators that hold concessions to the desolated coastal areas of the desert and have visiting rights to the many shipwrecks and ghost diamond mining towns is an absolute once in a lifetime experience. The tour operators provide all meals, toilets, hot showers and accommodation in tents, radio contact between all vehicles guidance, recoveries (when you get stuck in the sand - this is a self drive 4x4 experience definitely not to be missed, far better than any roller coaster ride !)
You will experience the wonders of the desert hands on, the uniqueness of desert life and the remoteness of the oldest desert in the world.

This trip is a must when in Swakopmund. The scenery is really like the moon photo's. Roads are well maintained. And while there, drink coffee and eat cake at Goanikontes.

You can see why this area is known as the Moonscape. It really looks like those shots of the moon. I think the area is known as Roter Kamm. Barren and rocky but worth a look. There's a parking area and a short hike up to a really good viewpoint. In the same area you should be able to find some of the fascinating Welwitschia plants that are hundreds of years old, and look prehistoric too..!!

Salve, si possono fare piccoli trekking senza guida nella Moon Landscape? Oppure, a chi bisogna rivolgersi per un'escursione guidata?
