I would recommend visiting these caves if you can. The whole area is a little off the beaten track but worth the visit. The Karst landscape is beautiful and the caves fascinating. The audio tour is great and you get a real insight into the...More

Getting to Vieng Xai requires quite some effort. If you do not have to be in the Sam Neua area for other reasons, I would say it doesn't merit the detour. But if you must travel to Houapan anyhow, it should not be missed. The...More

I would definitely recommend this tour. The audio tapes that you listen to are very well made and even have interviews and personal accounts of people who lived through that time. We rented bicycles and were able to see 6 caves. The history we learned...More

It was really bordering on average-very good. Firstly it's worth a visit for the beautiful scenery, quiet village and of course to be educated about the history. We went to each site on bikes with a guide. She spoke little English, but the audio guide...More

A very interesting and fascinating site, really worth a visit! Especially the audio guide is intriguing. Although the caves are extremely well built, it is hard to imagine how the Lao people lived there for 9 long years!

Definitely worth visiting, the site is enormous and the quality of the audio tour is phenomenal. The only tricky thing is getting there from Sam Neua if travelling on public transport. The 8am bus from Sam Neua was no longer running when we were there...More

A very chilling yet real experience walking the area and caves where many Laoations hid from enemy American bomber planes during the American/Vietnam War. Many people forget what happened in neutral Laos and this is a must-see as part of a Lao or American/Vietnam War...More

But a long and uncomfortable distance to travel. You would probably need to be into revolutionary tourism to come here. If you liked Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and the Palestinian Territories, don't miss Vieng Xai!

We visited Vieng Xai from Sam Neua and stayed the night before coming back the next day. We stayed at Lettaphone GH just by the bus stop - 60,000 for a clean double. The caves are very interesting, with a good audio guide but I'd...More
