The Ulysses S. Grant Monument in Lincoln Park is the single most prominent feature in Chicago's largest park and the largest bronze statue in the United States. Completed and dedicated in 1891 to the Civil War hero and 18th President of the United States, it is located west of North Cannon Drive, between West Fullerton Avenue and East North Avenue, and overlooks North Avenue Beach and Lake Michigan to the east and Lincoln Park's South Pond to the west. Designed by Cincinnati sculptor Louis Rebisso, it is an equestrian statue of Grant dressed in his Civil War uniform. It stands 18 feet, three inches tall and sits atop a solid granite pedestal, which is divided into three parts. The pedestal terrace runs parallel to Lake Shore Drive and stands 16 feet tall. Above that is a granite superstructure standing another 16 feet tall and consisting of a stone roof and balustrade. Finally, there is a pedestal proper that is 10 feet, six inches tall. Altogether, the total height of the granite pedestal is 42 feet, six inches.

Great location for this monument. And biking, hiking trails nearby. And ofcourse the Lincoln Park Zoo in the background and Lake Michigan in front. I love to come here for longer walks around Lincoln Park.

Ulysses S. Grant Monument in Lincoln Park was dedicated in 1891 to commemorate and honor Ulysses S. Grant (1822 -- 1885) -- the American Civil War general and the 18th President of the US (1869 -- 1877). The monument was designed by Louis Rebisso, and Burling & Whitehouse architects.
The bronze equestrian sculpture on a granite pedestal atop an arched structure -- the total height of the monument is 42ft (12,9m) -- makes the monument look grand and very impressive. Placed on the elevated grounds of the vast park, it can be viewed from various angles and distances, and the monument evokes deep feelings of respect, memory and esteem for the distinguished statesman in the history of the United States.
Ulysses S. Grant Monument is one of the best monuments we've seen in Lincoln Park.

I have seen this monument many times as we have walked through Lincoln Park - and had never realized it was Grant. I walked closer to read the sign plus confirmed it on the Chicago Park District website. It was installed in 1891 and Grant's widow was there at it's dedication. Surprised so few people have reviewed such an impressive and large statue.

The statue of General Grant on horseback is a great tribute to a man who did so much to help save the union of our states. He was a great soldier as many historians have pointed out to us in recent excellent books and gripping documentaries. His great skill on horseback is captured in this statute. I also like the fact that the statue is placed up high on top of the monument. It is like he is watching over all of us who pass by him.

Every day, weather permitting, I take a long walk through Lincoln Park and along Du Sable Lake Shore Drive. Along the way, I always make a point of stopping at the Ulysses S. Grant Statue to to gaze at the ducks in the Lincoln Park pond to the west, Lincoln Park Zoo to the north, Lake Michigan to the east and Chicago's skyline to the south. Located in Lincoln Park, west of Cannon Drive, between Fullerton Avenue and North Avenue, the monument honoring the Civil War hero and 18th president of the United States was commissioned shortly after his death in 1885 and was completed and dedicated in 1891, with an estimated 250,000 people in attendance. It is an equestrian statue of Grant dressed in his Civil War uniform and sitting atop his favorite horse Cincinnati. At the time of its completion, standing 18 feet, three inches tall and consisting of 22 metal pieces fashioned together to give the appearance of a singular piece, it was the largest bronze statue cast in the United States. The statue sits atop a solid granite pedestal that is divided into three parts--pedestal terrace, stone roof and balustrade, pedestal proper--with a total height of 42 feet, six inches. Add it all up and the monument stands 60 feet, nine inches.

There are numerous monuments scattered around Lincoln Park including this grand equestrian statue of Union Army Commander and 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-85) just east of the South Pond. This monument is the work of sculptor Louis T. Rebisso (1891) and depicts Grant on horseback in military officer uniform, scanning the horizon as if overlooking a battlefield.
The equestrian statue is atop an arched rustic stone structure with two levels, providing great height and emphasis on Grant's position in American history and the reverence felt for him by his supporters. It is an impressive monument that is well worth spending a few moments to view and enjoy when one is visiting Lincoln Park.

In this era of political correctness and historic revisionism, it isn't likely that anyone will be tearing down the Ulysses S. Grant Monument In Chicago's Lincoln Park. Located west of North Cannon Drive, between West Fullerton Avenue and East North Avenue, adjacent to Lincoln Park Zoo, with a commanding view of Lake Michigan, as Grant would have liked it, the statue was commissioned shortly after Grant's death in 1885, designed by Cincinnati sculptor Louis Rebisso and was completed in 1891. At the time of its completion, the monument was the largest bronze statue in the United States. Over 250,000 people were present at its dedication. It is an equestrian statue of Grant, dressed in his Civil War uniform, sitting atop a solid granite pedestal. The statue stands 18 feet, three inches tall. The total height of the statue and granite pedestal is 60 feet, nine inches. On a daily basis, dozens of people walk through Lincoln Park and around the South Lagoon and past Grant's monument, which can be viewed by drivers on North Lake Shore Drive. Trivia lovers might be interested in the fact that Grant's horse was named Cincinnati, the hometown of the sculptor who designed the statue.

You can't miss it. Not if you're walking or jogging through Chicago's Lincoln Park or driving along Lake Shore Drive. My wife and I pass by the impressive structure during our frequent walks through the park or on our way to Lincoln Park Zoo. It is the Ulysses S. Grant Monument, which memorializes the Civil War hero and two-term President of the United States. Located at 2045 North Lincoln Park West, west of North Cannon Drive between West Fullerton Avenue and East North Avenue, overlooking Lake Shore Drive and North Avenue Beach and Lincoln Park and the Lincoln Park lagoon and Lake Michigan, the 18-foot-tall equestrian bronze sculpture stands on a massive Romanesque arched base of rusticated stone. Designed by Cincinnati-based artist Louis T. Rebisso, it portrays Grant sitting on his favorite horse Cincinnati and facing south. It was installed in 1891 and more than 200,000 people attended the ceremonies, including Grant's widow. Grant died in 1885. It is the most significant landmark in Lincoln Park and perhaps the most impressive sculpture of its size in the city.

When walking or jogging through Lincoln Park or driving along North Lake Shore Drive, you can't miss the enormous 18-foot-tall bronze equestrian statue of Ulysses S. Grant sitting with his typical expression of repose while astride his favorite horse, Cincinnati, a Kentucky thoroughbred. While some criticized the work of sculptor Louis T. Rebisso, which was dedicated in 1891, Grant's eldest son Frederick described it as the "most satisfactory" of any of the portraits of his father. The historically accurate details include the field glasses on his right hand, the hat, uniform, spurs, saddle and holster. The statue is located west of North Cannon Drive between West Fullerton Avenue and East North Avenue, adjacent to Lincoln Park Zoo. The dedication ceremony was attended by an estimated 200,000 people. Twenty bands played the "Star Spangled Banner." At that time, the sculpture was the largest ever cast in the United States.
