Also a couple block walk from the Museum of Science and Industry, but not a place for most children unlike the Science and Industry museum. Nicely displayed artifacts in a not so modern facility, but adequate for its purposes.

This is one of the lesser known museums in Chicago, but you still don't want to miss it. You should call for directions first since it sits on the University of Chicago campus which is also something to see. Plan on spending the whole day here as there is sooo much to see. The collections encompass antiquities from ancient civilizations... More

You won't be sorry for including this stop on your itinerary. This is an unusual museum in that it offers a great deal of interest to unusual and extraordinary subjects.

You would never realize how great this little museum is if you walked past it. It's small. But it's one of the best historical and archaeological museums in the City of Chicago. The pieces from Iran, Iraq, China, Egypt, all top-notch. Just go. It's a bit out of the way in Hyde Park, but so worth the trip.

This is a truly amazing collection of artefacts from the cradle of civilization. Many of the artefacts were collected from area of current conflict which is terribly sad. The range of artefact spans tiny pieces of jewelry to monumental stone carvings. We rushed through this museum in 2 hours as they were closing but this in no way did it... More

When my wife and I went to Chicago for a conference, I knew I wanted us to hit the major sites. We saw the Art Institute, Field Museum, and the Oriental Institute Museum all in 2 days. We go back and forth on which is our favorite, if we can even choose. This one may be more geared towards history... More

Spent a very interesting afternoon at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago: learned more about ancient civilizations, saw artifacts of Babylon, Persepolis, and Egypt. Very accessible, with knowledgeable docents; fascinating view of ancient cultures; also the Institute has a very reasonably priced, diverse and high quality gift shop!

Unique examples of ancient artifacts from Middle East. Thought-provoking and amazing to consider how ancient these artifacts are. Nice low key change from big museums. Not sure I'd recommend for kids

This smallish museum is a fantastic place to learn about the ancient cultures of the middle east starting with Babylonia through Egypt. There are some huge and very impressive stone pieces such as the winged bull with a human head that weighs some 40 tons. There is an equally impressive statue of King Tut. The museum is careful to note... More

Absolutely world class and a must for anyone interested in archeology. After all, U of C is where Indy was working when his adventures started. The academic tour starts by showing you the window he supposedly exited in the first movie. Anyway, to be serious, this is where the early artifacts from UofC faculty digs in the middle east still... Staying in Hyde Park

Neighbourhood Profile
Hyde Park
If you want to get a feel for quintessential South Side Chicago, you have to make a stop in Hyde Park, one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods. This historic area is home to two of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions, the Museum of Science and Industry and the University of Chicago. A stroll here will bring you past vintage and grand hotels converted into luxury apartment buildings; peaceful gardens, parks and green spaces; and ivy-adorned museums and other cultural institutions that speak to the city’s diversity and architectural beauty.
