    A must go place!
After reading the reviews, especially around tourists, I was very sceptical but I’m so glad we went! We were made to feel very welcome by the doorman and locals. The drinks were so cheap compared to a lot of places in Downtown Chicago and the music was fabulous. This is a must visit!!

    Great venue, cheap drinks
We had to check out the jazz scene in Chicago and my husband wanted to check this particular place out. He has a few jazz albums of artists where they recorded here. Drinks were reasonably priced, being outside the downtown core. The band was terrific and I’m old and grumpy but didn’t find the music too loud that it left my ears ringing or that I needed to yell to talk to my spouse. Would definitely come back again if we’re back in town.

    JAZZ!
A Chicago institute for decades, the Green Mills is a classic American jazz club. Its got a great ambience with warm romantic lighting, leather booths, a long art nouveau bar that curves around the place, art covered walls and columns, and nice stage for a live music and a small but dedicated dance floor. Once prolific across America decades ago, this is now an endangered species, perhaps the only one left of its kind in Chicago? Thursday nights Alan Gresik's Swing Orchestra plays all the jazz classics. A regular group of local swing dancers dance away. Cocktails are flowing all around. All around a great scene that's hard to find in this modern age. Cash only, and it does get crowded!

    Great music and ambience
Came here on a Wednesday evening to see a guitar player He and the band were great I asked the waitress for the cocktail menu and she told me to go on their wifi - not impressed Then there was a table in front of us talking loudly during the set Multiple patrons had to shush them but they were drunk and belligerent and hot even louder and more obnoxious They should have been ejected but the waitress kept bringing them rounds and smiling nicely at them( i guess as long as she gets her tip) Then a large Tony Soprano looking guy went up to them and said”I came here for the music not to listen to you” Well even that didnt stop them It’s too bad they don’t have security to deal with this and they put the onus on paying customers Management should have stepped up and kicked them out

This place is absolutely horrible! My wife and I were actually excited to check this place out, and listen to some live music. We have never in our lives have been to a place with such awful customer service. If you are not someone that hangs out there every night, they do not even want you in there. We ended up not even staying for a drink. Mainly because we couldn't even get anyone to wait on us, and they weren't even busy. Each employee was as bad as the next. With all of the great places to spend your money in Chicago, definitely avoid this one at all costs.

The place was packed, standing room only by 8pm. The doorman said people get there two to three hours early just to get a seat. My husband and I, momentarily, were mad at ourselves for not having arrived earlier. Then we realized that even if we'd gotten a seat at the bar or a table, they allow so many people in that there would have been people, two deep, standing inches from us and blocking our view. The band was good, but you could barely see them past all the people and those dancing on the tiny dance floor which was big enough for three couples to dance comfortably. We took the $40 loss, and went elsewhere.

Our trip to Chicago was twofold: 1) Kurt Elling was going to be performing here and 2) to see our two grandchildren, it was our grandsons 11th birthday. The Green Mill is a small intimate cocktail lounge, a lot of people and a lot of music. Its great and its old school swing. When we got there for Kurt Elling's show, we were fortunate to get the last seat at a small table, but would still be able to see the stage if we stood up. As it turned out, Kurt Elling had two seats in front of the stage and invited my husband and I to sit there with a few of his friends. Needless to say, we were beyond ecstatic! We have seen him several times before but this was by far the most special, wonderful time, it felt like a birthday present, He was so gracious, and just wanted us to have a good time. We'll stop by again when we visit our grandchildren, and hope Kurt Elling will be in town, performing.

The service at this place is a nightmare. A very rude guy at the entrance charged us $15 for entrance fee even though there were no available bar or table seats. As a consequence, we had to find a spot where we wouldn’t be in everyone’s way or obstructing peoples’ view (since the bar is very narrow between bar and table seats), so we went all the way to the left end, where an extremely horrible man (probably the manager) started yelling and hissing at us. When I opposed this behavior, he threw us out! Never ever going back to this awful place!!!

This was an experience I would highly recommend if you are visiting Chicago. We arrive at 9-ish on a thursday evening, and the place was full. Luckily, some people were going so we catch a booth for the 4 of us. We order dirty martinis and were made to perfection. The band is amazing and the place has a lot of history.

Al Capone’s old hang out in Uptown. We sat at the bar and listened to a small jazz band and had late night cocktails on a Monday night. Place was packed at 11pm. $5 entrance fee was perfect. Atmosphere is nice and old, even the bar cash register was from the 1920’s, if not earlier. Music was amazing. Would go back next time!

So much fun! Yes it's all cash and it has it's own way of doing things but it was totally worth it. Looks like a hole in the wall but was awesome. Went on Thursday night for swing band but should have lined up before 8pm to get a table. We got there at 8:30 and barely found 2 barstools to sit on. The band took a 30 mins break at 9pm so that was bad timing and no one left. Place looked great - people were dressed up. Lots of fun. Band was AWESOME.
