This is where Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum Smith were murdered. It had a visitor's center and you can go on a free tour of the jail. The guides are very informative.

On our way between Kansas City Missouri and Nauvoo Illinois, we stopped at Carthage Jail in Carthage Illinois, about 1/2 hour from Nauvoo. This has long been on my travel bucket list. Built in 1838, it is where Joseph Smith, the original leader of the...More

We had visited this a couple of years back. It was still interesting to see, however, rather than presenting as part of an historical event - it was present more as a sermon by our tour guide. The jail portion was still interesting .

I didn’t realize that we would be in the very room where Joseph Smith was killed. I’m not LDS but being in the very spot where someone is murdered because of intolerance can not be anything but thought provoking

Wish I could have spent a longer time in the jail. Such a wonderful place with a tragic ending. Great for a historical perspective.

Tells the story of a 19th century people and their leader, persecuted by outsiders because of their religion. This is the site and story of their leaders death. Well restored and well worth an hour or two visit. Easy to get to in center of...More
