The church is light and interesting and surrounded by gardens and views. There is plenty of parking in the town and a large shop selling religious souvenirs. Don't miss the wonderful Nativity museum next door,

If you are a catholic, it is a must to visit this Basilica. It is on route from Ljubljana to Lake Bled. The painting of Our Lady, Help of Christian was moved to Ljubljana during Second World War to protect the city.
Pope Benedict XVI visited the shrine.

How you view this site will turn a lot on why you are there and what you believe.
This church became a pilgrimage site and was said to be a place of miraculous healing beginning in the 1860s. Since then, it has been made an honorary basilica by Pope (now Saint) John Paul II, who also visited in 1996. First Lady Laura Bush followed five years later.
As a place of faith and healing, it is very moving. There is a painting of a Madonna and Child in a side chapel that is the primary focus. When we visited on a Tuesday morning, there were several people already there. If you visit, you'll want to go into the chapel behind the painting (it's OK) and you'll see hundreds of tributes of those who visited and believe they were healed here.
I am inherently skeptical about such accounts, but had to agree that there was something spiritually very special about this church.
Please note that the title of "basilica" is honorary because of the church's spiritual importance. In terms of it's size, it is typical of the churches in this area, but likely a lot smaller than what you would ordinarily associate with that term.
Whether or not you are drawn by (or believe in) faith, this is a very pretty church that is worth a visit.

My family and I visited this Marian Shrine on our way back to the coast from Lake Bled. Since it was a Sunday, it was very busy at the church. The original painting of Our lady was breathtaking, along with all of the offerings for prayers answered. The garden outside the church also has an intriguing sculpture.

We had just completed a tour of the breathtaking Italian cathedrals in Rome, Venice, Assisi, etc. This church is not as architecturally beautiful, nor does it have the statues, gold or marble. But when we realized and felt the faith that thousands of people from around the world had brought into this church in prayer for their loved ones, we felt something that we never did before, anywhere, any time. We hope you will feel it too, as you view the pictures and read the messages. (Just a short drive from Lake Bled, which was another awesome experience of nature.)

Basilica is very popular in Slovenia. It is devoted to St. Vitus but all people venerate just Mary Help of Christians, painting of Leopold Layer in the side chapel. Half of the village is reorganized for pilgrims with souvenir shops, some restaurants, traffic regime. Parking is expensive. Souvenir shop near the basilica (with coffee shop and little gallery) is less expensive and with rich supply of souvenirs with picture of Mary, angels, crosses, key holders, candles. You can visit museum, some chapels near the church or enter to the main attraction.
Church is big but always too small for special events. People mainly visit chapel on the right with famous picture and they pray there. Altars, pictures, votive tablets and inscriptions, are artistically unimportant except new north doors. They were opened on January 1 for special Anno Santo, Holy Year 2016. So, with all promotion of the importance of the place and church you are little disappointed with too many decorations without good taste.

It's a nice church. It has some kind of sensor-operated-electrical-doors, so the giant old church doors open, when you come close. At first, it freaked me out, because I've never seen a church with self-opening doors, but then it kind of made sense - God is opening the door for you and inviting you inside! :)
Overall, it's a nice church. I really liked the very creative statue of the Holy family that is standing outside of it.

This sanctuary is probably the most important Marian one in Slovenia. Many faithful going there give it a special ambience. The basilica is a nice Neo-renaissance building. In the exterior the simple façade contrasts in a harmonious way with the majestic steeple and the big dome of the lateral chapel. Inside, stand out the interesting ex-votos and above all the chapel with the Virgin’s icon. Enjoy!

If you are looking for a place to feel the peace, to enjoy in views is this one of the places where you definitely need to go. There's so much to see and feel. Long history, memories on important people, many prays in the air. You can really feel the presence of peace inside of the Church and also around it. If you can also participate in Holly mass it's even better.
Enjoy in beauties and peacefulness of the place.

We stopped by this church on our way north east in Slovenia. Many pilgrims visit this site known for its painting that had quite a history to it. We enjoyed the church and surrounding areas. There was an art display in a gallery on the premises.
