A very enjoyable experience. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and I learned a lot about the local history of Jefferson here. Admission cost is low and there's much to see. If you are into history or science I recommend stopping by.

Scheduled Ghost Tour thru the Museum and the cemetery. The group did an awesome job with this tour. We were the last tour for the evening, then a hayride for refreshments at the coffee shop. Took about an hr and a half.
Great way to learn the history of the city and many of the participants were descendants of citizens that served the city.
Hint: Evening tour was the best and easiest to find parking.

Wonderful place to go and brush up on some history for yourself and be sure and take your kids or grandkids to learn where and how some medical things got started. Low cost for some good info.

Stopped by with my 16 & 13 year old sons. They have little patience for museums but really liked this place. I prepped in advance by asking them to imagine surgery with no anasthesia. It seemed to have worked, as they not only looked at the extensive exhibits but also read many placard captions. One funny thing - they offer discounted admission to anesthesiologists.. I know a few, and they can certainly afford the $5 adult entry fee. Exhibits feature much more than just Crawford Long's stuff - there is much on the evolution of surgical pain treatment. Great place to spend an hour or more.

The Crawford W. Long Museum is an amazing historical site in downtown Jefferson. This is the exact location where Dr. Long first used ether in a surgical experiment to extract a neck tumor from a patient, and is credited as the first person to discover surgical anesthesia. I had no idea that a 'celebrity' of sorts was just down the road from where I live!

The museum itself is very impressive, and you will find many artifacts from the time when Dr. Long practiced, including some of his own personal equipment and surgical tools. There are two half of the museum: the medical museum and an old fashioned general store. The medical portion also houses some of the Long family's personal items such as furniture and paintings from the home. You will also find what a hospital room may have looked like in the 1800's. The general store portion is very interesting as well, as this site was where the original store was housed. I felt like I was back in time as I went through the shop!

It took my brother and I about an hour to walk through the entire museum, and they also have a gift shop in the front. So bring your camera and have a great time!

Happy Museum Hunting!

dr. long was the fist to use ether for its pain relieving properties. this museum honors hi, and reflects upon his life, family and times. nicely done tribute to the time well reflected through medical exhibits well beyond his discovery of the useful properties of ether.

I believe it was in 2014 that we visited this museum in downtown Jefferson while visiting our son's family there. There are two floors dedicated to early wheelchairs, operating tables and equipment, and various other medical equipment and aids from late 1800's into the early 20th Century. Admission is reasonable and you will find the tour interesting. This should be on your list of places to visit when in or near Jefferson, Ga. Not far from Commerce, Ga.
