This popular park on Lake Allatoona is ideal for swimming, water skiing and fishing. Visitors can bring their own boats or rent from nearby marinas. A sand swimming beach is nestled in a cove and surrounded by trees, providing a great place to cool off during summer. Picnic shelters and group shelters may be rented for meetings, parties, reunions and other celebrations. Guests often stay overnight in rental cottages, a spacious campground or the park’s lakeside yurt. While best known for the 12,000-acre lake, Red Top Mountain is also a hiker’s haven. More than 15 miles of trails wind through the forested park, providing opportunities for exercise and nature photography. A short, paved trail behind the park office is suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, welcoming guests to explore a reconstructed 1860s homestead. The gravel-topped 4-mile Iron Hill Trail is open to both hikers and bikers, offering pretty views of the lake’s shoreline.Named for the soil’s rich red color caused by high iron-ore content, Red Top Mountain was once an important mining area. Iron pour programs are occasionally held near the Vaughn Cabin behind the park office.

I arrived in Cartersville early last Sunday and it was a perfect day for a hike. My hotel recommended The Iron Hill Trail in Red Top Mountain State Park. The park is easy to find, right off I 75 . I had no trouble finding the trail. Parking was crowded by not full. Once on the trail I saw a... More

I decided to check out Red Top one bright Saturday morning in February, with blue skies and 60-degree temperatures. Face it, you don’t get many days like that in this region. This may be the most easily accessible state park in Georgia – right off of I-75. It shocked me that an attractive place this close to Atlanta had as... More

I make it a point to camp there a couple time each summer. I travel all over the United States and feel this is one of the most relaxing and beautiful camp sites. Peaceful quite and you become so entranced by the natural beauty that you forget civilization is just outside the gates. Gorgeous lake and plenty of shade if... More

Great hiking opportunities, beautiful scenery. If you can, rent one of the affordable cabins on the lake! In the fall, there are many deer.

We visit here often during the summer. The beach is nice and tucked back off the main part of the lake. There are many places to picnic. The hiking trails are a great way to spend some time in the woods and along the waters edge. There is even a wheelchair accessible trail that features some sites like outdoor musical... More

We camp in our RV frequently, so we know great campgrounds when we see them! This is absolutely natural beautiful and every site is very nice! If you want woods and beauty this is it! Not easy to get into every site, but worth the effort! This is not an RV parking lot for snowbirds on their way south! This... More

We hike here often. We enjoy the trails and location. Very peaceful. The trails are well marked. The staff at the offices are very informative and friendly. Beautiful views of the surrounding water and woods.

This park is very clean and no trash to be seen. The Paths are very wide which makes it easy for passing. I do wish they had more dog trash containers throughout the walk. I mean who wants to carry around their dog poop for miles. We try to go here once a month. There are three main path that... More

Went hiking on the well marked trails in December. Very enjoyable particularly since my dog and I seemed to be the only ones there. This place has many spectacular views of the surrounding water and woods. Just Beautiful (even in winter)!

This is a terrific GA state park just north of Atlanta, GA. They have several very nice hiking trails that follow along Allatoona Lake
