Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The drive to the carpark is very steep. So be careful, definitely wont tow a caravan or trailer. The paths leading down to the Alligator Gorge can be confusing, we asked other travellers along the way. We went down and soon had no idea where we were despite using the map provided by the National Park and WildLife Service SA . Remember to pay for entry fees online before entering the park.
That said, the walk to the bottom of the gorge, inside the gorge, and through the Narrows, was spectacular. Everywhere we looked was greenery and lush lush ferns, wild flowers etc. There was water in the stream and rather than try to balance yourself on the dry river rocks, just wear shoes that you can get wet in and make a splash in the water, it's much better that way. The climb out for the gorge was by way of a very steep staircase. Beware, it's not for the faint hearted, it was a tough climb for me. I was puffed out when I finally made it to the top. Worth it? Yes, yes, yes. We were there Oct 2020 (the date shown is not correct, didn't have option to choose 2020!)

Walk through gorge was awesome. We did the 9km loop walk however about 3 km was walking down a steep fire track which was boring! I would recommend turning around at start of fire track and walking back though the gorge to the stairs and continuing on through the 'narrows' walk. I would also recommend walking about 1km past the 'terraces' as the gorge in the sunshine further along is amazing. Road in is steep and slow with deep dips in the road.

Paid our park fee to the Caravan Park owner who registered it for us. We went first thing in morning was very pleasant visit. Well signposted we chose the easier shorter walks depending about two & half hours in the park.

Spectacular rock formation and colours makes it extremely photogenic. The ali and the gorge lookouts are short return walks from the car park. I then descended down the steps to do the 2km gorge circuit which was really enjoyable. Even if you are not fit like me, it is doable just take your time.

Start early to make the most of the cool dampness, even at this time of the year.
It's a moderate walk around the Loop, the last climb out of the gully being quite demanding - for me anyway, all uphill. But it's doable. The Narrows is a bit shorter and a bit easier, but in either case, enclosed shoes would be highly recommended, as it is very uneven underfoot - lots of loose stones in the river bed. A fair amount of wildlife, but we didn't see any snakes (there are some, including apparently an enormous python...), nor any koalas.

A drive to Alligator Gorge is a must while in Melrose. Especially take the time to walk to "The Narrows" as it is a beautiful although rugged walk.

One of the best gorges I’ve seen. Kids thoroughly enjoyed the 2km loop. Breathtaking scenery, all for the small cost of a national park pass.

Will be back again.
