I visited on a tour of Fort-de-France, Saint-Pierre and other locales. It was heartbreaking to hear the story of the volcanic eruption.If only the officials had listened to the warnings. The image of the theatre before the devastation was magnificent. I can't believe every man-made thing wasn't completely destroyed. Apparently, one person survived the eruption, and he was in the jail next door. What is left of the theater is beautiful to witness.

Visiting the poat-eruption remains this historic theatre was quite remarkable. The self-toursd site includes large before-and-after photos and helpful diagrams that are captioned in both French and English.
We have brought guests here on a number of occasions. It is easy to access, and we are never bored on a future visit. The site is an easy walk from town. However, it would be challenging for those with mobility issues.

Stopped here on an island tour while driving through St. Pierre, the formal capital of Martinique, before the massive volcanic eruption in 1902 which killed 28,000 people in less than two minutes.From the ruins you can see the adjacent jail, where one lucky guy survived the volcano eruption- a prisoner who was locked away in an underground cell. He actually was somehow picked up by Barnum and Bailey and toured with the carnies--advertised as the only "thing" to have survived the volcano! According to our guide, there was also one other survivor who had been living in a cave.....

the village and this landmark are rather neglected, no endeavor is to be seen to maintain historical buildings (same problem in FdF!).
And when there was a restoration cennturies ago it was done dilettante like in the église nearby

Although its not a stop for an entire day, more like an hour or two, but still a must do. Dramatic views from the town overlooking the ocean as an extra bonus.

We visited as part of a cruise tour. The area is well-labeled with signs, and the history is clear. To get there, you need to climb some cobblestone steps, which can be quite slick when wet.

Our Martinique island tour stopped briefly here to pay our respects to the 30,000 people that were buried by Mount Pelee's catastrophic pyroclastic outflows and to see what was left of this once beautiful theatre. The ruins are not world class but like Pompei in Itay is worth the visit just to see for themselves what volcanic destruction can perpetrate on this planet.

An interesting sight preserving the devastation wrought by the eruption for those that are attracted by such historic sights, easily found.

This was a really interesting ruin in the city!
I didn't go to the museum first, honestly. I just wandered by since I was in Saint-Pierre and I had just finished lunch. I'd heard that it was a must-see. and it was certainly impressive. The ruins are larger than I expected (though, to be fair, it was a theater and the jail next door).
The placards include brief translated English descriptions, but the French descriptions give a lot more information, and it's interesting. It was cool to see the theater, and to recognize elements still present in contemporary theaters.
Plus, reading the firsthand account of the eruption by the survivor from the jail was chilling. The space in which prisoners were confined (this was a short-term holding jail) was informative to see. If you're in Saint-Pierre, I'd recommend stopping by and reading about it.
Plus, it's free.
