I think JASA is now Deep Obsession Charters. Capt Susan was great, dropped us exactly every time and the rest of the crew were great! They were all very enthusiastic about the sea life, even stopped the boat to see if we could swim with...More
I have been out with Jim Abernathy several times and each time is awesome. Every time we've been they ask us where we want to go (not just to the closest and most convenient places like other boats). The staff notice a ton of smaller...More
My wife were heading to West Palm Beach for a week of sun and wondered what scuba diving might be like in the area (we were sceptical). Through reviews on TripAdvisor we discovered Jim Abernethy's scuba company and were very pleased with the results. My...More
Dove with JASA 4 days (10 dives) during my April 10-19 trip to the area. I dove with them 2 years ago and also went with Jim to Bahamas in 2008.
What impresses me so much each time I dive with these guys (and gals...More

My experience was nothing but positive. I reserved a spot ahead of time and called the shop a few times with questions. Every time I called I was treated well and respectfully. I wasn't made to feel like I was asking dumb questions. I booked...More
An incredible experience very close encounters with large Tiger and Great Hammerheads and numerous other Shark species. If you love sharks then i highly recommend this trip. The crew and the boat are superb. But the real stars are the Sharks i will never forget...More

Rachel. No reputable provider will take you on a boat dive after only a very short course. Some resorts do but even that is usually only after a teaching session in a swimming pool and some additional discussion of diving principals. Abernathy does offer something called "Discover Scuba". This is a PADI recognized course which, as the name implies, is intended to give you a taste of diving before you decide if you wish to get certified. Abernathy will take you on a supervised shallow dive from land at a site they use for training. I don't know exactly how much time it will take but would guess at least half a day. I suggest you give them a call and inquire. As to pricing, this is from their website;
This is a great way to try scuba diving without doing a certification course. You’ll get a basic understanding of the sport and enjoy a beautiful dive at the world famous Blue Heron Bridge. Minimum age is 10 years old. Private class $174.95+tax. Bring a friend and you both get $25.00 off! Includes: all rental gear, instructor fees, a short class and an open water dive excursion with one of our instructors.
For any lessons we do require a Medical Statement Form be filled out prior to diving.
If you answer ‘YES’ to ANY question on the Medical Statement Form you will need a doctor to complete the ‘Physician’s Impression’ section of the Form within the previous 12 months.
