Wanted a break from the theme parks, so we signed up to do a self guided tour . The guys were friendly and helpful. Showed us the paddling strokes , a safety briefing , and in 10 mins we were off .

Great trip. I suggest the kayaks as they afford more stability. I have taken the trip several times and always saw several gators. The trips are self guided. We brought waters and light snacks as there are a couple areas to stop and enjoy. By...More
We had a great time canoeing down the river and were able to see different animals in the river and during the drive back. We had never canoed before and Mike was more than happy to give us a crash course before we went off....More
For a reasonable price you can rent a canoe and float down the Hillsborough River. You will see true Florida nature, not plastic animals as you gently float along. I’ve seen alligators, box turtles and all manner of herons and other birds. They will pick you...More
I came here with my family, we rented a canoe and kayak and traveled the 2 hour trail. It was beautiful and peaceful. The river was a bit flooded over, but still nice. We saw a few alligators, birds, and sun gazing turtles on logs....More
I recently read some reviews of Canoe Escape and decided to drive down bright and early the other day for a guided canoe tour. Once I got there, I was told that guided tours need to be booked in advance...BUT, I could rent a kayak...More
Visited canoe escape today. Great setup. Drove up and paid in the office. $100 for two canoes. Well worth it. The office is riverside and they had us in the water in 15 minutes. We left at 930 and took trip 1. We saw lots...More
I had THE BEST afternoon (shoutout to Michael, who was a great guide!). Within minutes of the trip we were seeing tons of birds and alligators. Honestly, in the 2.5-hours we were on the canoe I wasn't bored for a second.
Thank you again!
We have our own kayaks and love kayaking Florida rivers. We hadn’t been on the Hillsborough River and just learned of this outfitter. We stopped by one day to talk to them and they were very friendly and helpful. We made a reservation and came...More
Great people...easy check in! Called the day before to make a reservation and were warmly welcomed. Located in a county park...be sure to have single dollar bills to pay for $2 all-day parking! Bathrooms located bearby(not port a pottys!). Had a quick refresher from the...More

Thank you for your question. It certainly is a wilderness trip through a 16,000-acre swamp. I like to tell people you're going to think you're lost but there is only one river; follow the widest body of water and moving water downstream. Occasionally, in high water times, when the water overflows its bank into the swamp it can feel like you are lost. This is a very common emotion. During those time periods we remind everybody to follow the orange tags and then all of a sudden you will see the main channel of the river. Because it is a swamp we spend several hundred man-hours a year maintaining the river and when we learn of a fresh tree we try to take care of it the same day. But, occasionally there will be a snag or a tight limbo experience. Very rarely in 27 years have people had to pull out on the banks to pull around a tree. Your question is a good one and we encourage you to come back again because now you will be paddling as a veteran of the river. Of course, we always update our paddlers at launch time of any current conditions that they need to be aware of (and that we know about) before the start of their trip. Hope to see you soon! I don't know what trip number we did but we put into the river right at the boat ramp near the company's trailer. The water was fairly low that day but we had no problems maneuvering around gators. Whenever we got too close to them they immediately jumped in the water and ran away.
