St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral was founded in 1905 and is the first and original Greek Orthodox Christian parish of the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. The present Cathedral was completed during WWII, in 1943. Much of the interior marble, including the iconostasis (icon screen), is from the Greek pavilion of the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. The Cathedral contains actual relics of St. Nicholas of Myra and is a point of pilgrimage for those who seek the intercessions of this most beloved of Christian saints. The Cathedral tower is the tallest architectural structure in Tarpon Springs and serves as the heart of the downtown and city. In the plaza to the north of the Cathedral is the famous "Cross Diver" statue which captures the pinnacle of the annual Epiphany Day (January 6) celebration for which the St. Nicholas Cathedral parish is known the world over. At the base of the statue are the names of young men - Orthodox Christian and non-Orthodox Christian - who made the supreme sacrifice during World War II.

The Greek Heritage is strong in Tarpon Springs and this cathedral is at the heart of it. Every January 6th on the Epiphany the traditional Greek Cross Dive at the nearby Spring Bayou is held after the religious service at the church. The church is decorated with religious icons and stunning stained glass windows. There is even a miraculous weeping... More

Beautiful church not far from Sponge Docks. Street parking available. Inside is just stunning. When you are finished, walk through historic downtown, and over to old train station, which is now historical society.

The first time I went the church was closed so I made an effort to come again a few days later while it was open. I am sure glad I did. The interior is stunning and must be seen. Not many churches here in Canada that compare, if any at all. The next time I am in the area I... More

The Local Greek Church was BEAUTIFUL inside , the local outdoor surrounding area is beautiful too in MY opinion. The Greeks know how to Love the Lord Jesus, Amen.

For over 100 years the Greek community celebrates The Epiphany with the throwing of the cross at Spring Bayou. Over 20,000 people annually come to witness this celebration as young Greek men dive into the chili waters to retrieve the blessed cross. Celebrations abound with Greek food, street dancing, and Festivities

We walked here from the Sponge Docks and were glad we did. Beautiful cathedral-lots to take in. Good information in the foyer before entering the sanctuary. Much prettier inside than the outside of the building suggests.

.Although I have been to Tarpon Springs on several occasions, I have never actually been inside St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. On my most recent visit to Tarpon Springs in January 2016, I finally had the opportunity to do so. I was excited to finally see the Weeping Icon of St. Nicholas. It is just inside the entrance doors. It... More
