This reserve, on the outskirts of Sarasota, is easy to get to and offers a chance to see aquatic birds such as roseate spoonbills and storks up close. Unusually for this part of Florida, the reserve includes a hill, built from the spoil when the lake was dug out. From halfway up you can peer into the former celery fields,... More

I had heard about this place and it's interesting history. We opted for a walk after Thanksgiving dinner today. What a beautiful view overlooking the Philippe River basin. We will go again and again. Well maintained fields but be sure to wear walking or hiking shoes. The trails are stone. There was a nature center on the property privately owned... More

Went here to go birding. Saw roseatte spoonbills, white ibit, and lots of other birds. A nice, easy birding stop if you are in Sarasota area.

Just a short drive from downtown Sarasota one can find a remarkable place where nature is put into focus. The Celery Fields is a wonderful example of land rehabilitation. Once used as a landfill it is now a delightful place to view birds and wildlife, exercise, play or just take a walk. There is a small hill where from the... More

The Celery Fields are amazing. When Bertha Palmer (Yes, THE Bertha Palmer from Palmer Ranch and from her husband's Palmer House Hilton in Chicago) decided to go big and develop Sarasota and create an economy, she decided we needed agriculture. She decided to grow, you guessed it, CELERY! She hired workers to dig up the swamp, and a large area... More

We always wanted to run over the Skyway Bridge and see this Audubon property. Birders everywhere and we did see a Whistling Duck brood, a male, female & chicks. We hiked a bit, there is a nice steep (man made) hill if you want a heart rate climb. We did the circumference trail. Nice, clean, restrooms, what is not to... More

very different. If you like to hike the walk uphill is pretty steep but well worth it. great view. it's beautifully landscaped but you have to read the information. very historical and cross the street to see the rest of it.

Take your longest lens and your best camera equipment. Bring only children who know how to be silent. Prepare to be delighted. The best time is very early morning, but the birding is always good here. Walkways keep you, your camera, and the birds safe. Lovers of native plant life should not miss this place either. I visit regularly and... More

If you have been on the Appalachian Trail or hiking in the Vermont or Colorado mountains, you will be disappointed here. It's nice but it ain't much. Maybe 2 hours tops and you may see some birds and wildlife.
