About
A very unusual cemetery - several graves have humorous epitaphs (e.g., "I told you I was sick").

Nice memorial & section to veterans But unfortunately some of the tombstones are in bad condition or broken. Still worth walking around, couple blocks from Duval Street. And as usual the chickens 🐔 everywhere.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 December 2023
- Colleen CTroy, New York2,518 contributionsUnique CemeteryIf you start at the sexton house you can find a free map to help guide you to about 50 of the local residents and there stories about how they helped/develop and change Key West. The cemetery is filled with headstones, monuments, markers, tombs and obelisk of many different shapes and sizes. Some old and worn ~ while others are new and grand and well maintained. But no matter where you are you will find more WILDLIFE in this one block than the whole island.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 January 2024
- suntan2007113 contributionsFunny headstonesWe came here to see the funny epitaphs. It is a large cemetery - make your life easier and go to the main entrance and pick up a free map, otherwise you will be just wandering. We were able to bike around the cemetery to see most of the highlighted graves.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 January 2024
- JanineSheffield, United Kingdom466 contributionsFirst visit to this amazing cemeteryWe visited the graveyard as I had seen some stories about it. The day was really hot so didn’t stay to walk around it all. The place is kept very tidy and there were workmen doing some maintenance work at the same time. The history is amazing with graves laid facing different directions and the mix of different faiths. The various statues and designs are fascinating. Plus, I was delighted to see the lovely iguanas too. I do if possible to visit local churches etc. Will definitely see again if we visit key West in the future.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 June 2024

We walked through here on a Sunday morning after attending church at the nearby basilica. It was very interesting to read the sign coming in that told about the various sections of the cemetery. We walked around for about an hour looking at a variety of memorials and graves. There was a section for Cubans and also from the ship the Maine and many other sections. A nice place to walk around and learn some history.

I like to visit cemeteries. This one is extra special because there is a printed guide (for free, at the entrance), and you can also sign up for a tour (I didn't have the timing for it). I went three different times, as there is lots to see, it's fun to seek out the more hidden historical markers, and it's a quiet escape from most of the touristy spots of Key West. The stories in the guide are very informative and interesting.

We almost always visit a cemetery when we visit new places. If you google "key west cemetery map & self guided tour" it will give you very interesting stories and locations of some of the deceased. It also shows you the location of the Catholic and Jewish part of the cemetery. I have to say for me, the most moving part is the USS Maine Monument. Take a moment to pay your respects to the ones who gave all to protect our freedoms. The interesting thing about this cemetery is no one is "buried" here. They are all in vaults or a mausoleum. There were lots of lizards and chickens too!

We booked the guided tour and it was well worth it. Our guide, Karl, was an absolute mine of information with such a lot of interesting stories about not only some of those there but also about the history of Key West. Thoroughly enjoyed the 2 hours we spent there.

I rode my bike in the Key West Cemetery primarily to visit the USS Maine Memorial. It’s a simple but nice memorial—I recommend taking the time to research the history before your visit. I also spent some time riding around the rest of the cemetery. It is all above ground, with a variety of tombs and memorials, and provides a glimpse into the island’s history. Please be respectful.

You can access a self-guided tour and map online before you go, or pick one up at the entrance when you get there. This cemetery is interesting because there are several different sections and monuments. Many of the graves were relocated here after being washed out during earlier storms. Lots and lots of very old headstones, plus some funny ones, too ("I told you I was sick"). The aforementioned map offers information on many notable locals. Just be warned, there is hardly any shade here, so try to go early in day before it gets too hot.

This place was very interesting. We walked around and looked at the headstones. THey had a memorial for NAVY men killed on a ship. One grave stone said "see I told you I was sick". We just laughed . We are going to adopt an anonymous grave. It was sad to see some that didn't have claim.

On the Conch Train tour we drove by the cemetery which was interesting to see since everything is above ground. The tour guide said people could not bury the dead because the land was too hard so they built above ground graves. It reminded me of the graves in New Orleans.

Excellent guided tour led by an academic who has intensively studied the family history of many of the notables buried here and provides in-depth details of their fascinating lives. Billed as a 90 min tour, but it lasted 2 hrs because of the many questions we asked. Really excellent tour.
