We had passed this cemetery several times during our trolley tours. It looked like an interesting area to explore so we walked there one day during our vacation. We were happily surprised to find self-guided tour brochures at the main entrance to the cemetery, so they made our exploration so much easier. The brochures highlighted & described 59 grave sites... If you've been to New Orleans' cemeteries, we'd pass on Key West's. If you haven't been to New Orleans' cemeteries, then Key West's may be worth a visit. Similar in concept to New Orleans', with many above-ground vaults, but much worse in execution. Some interesting vaults and headstones, especially the USS Maine site, but compared to people in New Orleans,... More

Went to re-visit my wife's maternal grandparents graves. The cemetary is 19 acres so it is huge on a small island. Located the graves finally but in doing so we saw 100's of iguanas as well as numerous graves in poor states of decay, caskets visible, graves totally collapsed and dozens of iguanas excavating gravesites etc.

I finally got to take the guided tour (3x/Year) and was very disappointed. It wasn't a tour of the cemetery, but a talk about 10 of the folks there. Each talk was merely a presenter reading from a printed page for nearly 10mins (a long time to stand and listen to a recital). I will need to research some way... More

This was recommended to us but what a waste of time. No parking other than one handicap space inside the gate. Run down and broken headstones. Is still used today. Very strange layout of graves. Don't see why anyone would want to go look at deteriorating graves.

This is the way to get your history. Whenever I'm in a new town I try to take a cemetery tour as it's the best way to get a feel for the history of a place. We took the time to get a guided tour and it was well worth it. This place especially will remind you of New Orleans... More

This cemetery has to have the best one liners on headstones I have ever seen! This place is ancient by US standards, and does feel like there are special people buried there. It is surprising how many important historical people are there. It was a very hot activity, there is little shade and the cemetery is 19 acres, and quite... More

Spent a quiet afternoon walking around and reading and learning about some of Key West's residents. As a Navy veteran, the section dedicated to the battleship Maine from 1898 was very somber. There is a section dedicated to the Cuban freedom fighters of the early 20th century as well. Lots of eclectic statues and stones to explore. Great way to... More

Always fun to visit. If you take a tour it saves you time and gives you alot of information. But you will probably want to go back because there are so many headstones to see.
