Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My kind of holiday is one where I dive deeply into the nature; traditions/history and culture of an area.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this garden. It is a great place to bring a large group like the University Group visiting the day I was there or to come to individually. Plan on spending some time to really absorb the nature. I spent the whole day there to truly absorb as much as I could and I still could go back again.
The mountain forest environments feel so different to the seaside vibes - visitors must experience both when traveling to a Caribbean island to truly experience it holistically.
Mountain, garden and forest are an intricate part of life in the countryside of Martinique - experience all here.
There are lots of wide open cultivated areas where you can meditate on the beautiful colors of the flowers; sunbathe on the perfectly maintained grass and take in the scents, sights and sounds of a garden. These areas are big - there is room for lots of visitors without feeling crowded.
There are also paths through the rain forest for forest bathing. The paths are well groomed but wear appropriate shoes for hiking and be aware there are stairs to go up and down.
I started my day reading the information at the welcome center. You can buy a freshly brewed morning coffee to get in the mood. Then I took an approximately 1 1/2 hour tour with Tina.
I have studied the flora and fauna of the West Indies as well as the traditional ways of using plants for over 20 years but Tina's tour showed me things I never heard of before. She looks at the plants around her as a pharmacopeia and a resource for tools to use in day to day life - that is interesting in itself. Yet the concept I thought she brought out the best was the way we can look to nature not just for healing and strength but as a guidance in conscious social living. The park is a good size so you can never learn all in the time of the guided tour but your view of nature and its relationship with man will change.
After the guided tour there were snacks showcasing local foods. You can buy lunch if you wish. I did not eat lunch the day I was there but I saw the food the chef was making was mostly from fresh produce she brought in that morning so I know a good meal can be purchased there.
After the snacks I took the rest of the day to explore the gardens. There is lots you can do on your own. I love the instagram perfect photo opportunities - some of the buildings have strategically located window 'frames' looking out on natures art below and flowers and unique plants abound. I also enjoyed revisiting the interpretive center - taking my time to look at each exhibit - they are intricate and describe the island from it's formation to it's flora and fauna. I love how they set it up so children can enjoy without hurting anything.
I found going through the center first with Tina the guide helped me to get much more benefit from this center - I like the stories of a culture; the historical tit bits that I could not know by just visiting alone.
There are covered areas to picnic or rest until a shower passes; a lovely big fountain and a little river gurgles by the welcome center. The washrooms; the centers and the grounds were spotless and well maintained.
Wear comfortable clothing; it can be cool so a long sleeved shirt is handy; bring a raincoat or umbrella in case of rain; wear shoes for walking in nature. I always travel with water.
Enjoy. Heal. Immerse in nature.

Lovely gardens with very interesting forest type walks, through vast collections of trees and plants. Great spotting different lizards along the streams / waterfalls. Excellent educational centre and we enjoyed a taste of local cuisine.

Because of its location, the Domaine d'Emeraude may not be as easy to reach as the garden of Balata from the south of the island. But the place is worth the extra 20 min drive along the N3 central road that goes through the tropical forest to this very nice garden. The garden is divided in several areas, including a mini trail in the jungle for those that do not dare to go on a real hike, with tree ferns, orchids and a whole bunch of large trees and epiphyts. There are enough shelters along the way in case of a sudden tropical shower and the central exploration center is targeting (French-speaking) families with children.
We enjoyed particularly the shop at the end that is loaded with not-overpriced local produce and souvenirs. There is also a small restaurant with good food and excellent coffee.

The whole facility is clean, neat, beautifully landscaped and in good repair, unlike many Caribbean locations. It is very well designed and combines a deluxe exhibition hall with hikes on cement paths through the jungle canopy. I simply did not expect to see something so well laid out and so well maintained. The exhibit hall is lovely with perhaps the crowning exhibit a geophysical model of the island under glass beneath your feet. Videos help convey that this island is subject to earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanos - chancy life here. Easy parking, pleasant staff and the crepes were good, too.

I was amazed with the Domaine d'Emeraude. It was huge.
We enjoyed admiring the flowers, the trees and plants as well.
There were two fountains as well.
In one of the building were explaining about the Acadians and Alsacians. This was the part of history.
We could walk in the forest, which we did.
We enjoyed this botanical. It was refreshing!
A must see!

No explanations necessary - the spectacular location, colors and flora say it all. Serene, natural vistas comprised of compact formal gardens and leisurely forest trails with interpretive center, gift shop, and snack bar. Friendly and enthusiastic staff.

Imagine, if you will, going to an art gallery to see beautiful paintings. Now what if almost all of those paintings had no plaques indicating the name of the painting, artist or anything about the painting.
What if this gallery, instead of telling you anything about the art, gave you an excellent explanation of the evolution of Martinique and Hurricanes.
What if everyone of the galleries ( greenhouse) except one has hundreds of the same painting.
What would you think?
In this day and age of internet, there is no reason why this garden could not have provided a way ( downloadable pdf file?, book, brochure, or even signs) where you could read about all the beautiful plants. A simple number in front of the plant could allow an easy way to look the plant up without upstructing the view. Why have a beautiful building on site that does educates you about many things BUT not the garden. Why is everything in french?
What if the beautiful walk through the forest is only described by it's length with nothing about what you will see. Are they all the same, only longer?
Don't get me wrong, I loved the place but I was so frustrated looking at beautiful flowers not knowing their name or anything about them. I had no problem paying the six euros and was very impressed by what was there but I would have paid more if I could have learned something about the plants.
I read that there are over 100 plants there that are unique to Martinique but if I don't see them then they are like the Emperor's new clothes, there is nothing there if you cannot see them.

We went to this place just after seeing Balata garden and probably that was the mistake. Not bad the garden very well taken care but compared to the Balata garden it's rather simple. It didn't helped either that it was raining and to do walks we barely did half.
In overall I think you see something not very different from the garden and do not see it after seeing the garden.

A quite beautiful botanical garden, although it is below the Balata Garden.
The most interesting thing is the 3 routes through the adjacent forest, from 30 minutes to 1 hour and a half, well marked and easy to complete.
If you have to choose between Emerauld and Balata, the latter is better.

The reserve in the northern part of Martinique is a beautiful quiet oasis. There is a very well curated museum as you arrive explaining the flora and fauna of the region. This is entirely in French. There are some manicured gardens but the real attraction are three well signposted forest walks, the longest one takes about an hour or a little more if you stop regularly to take in the sights and sounds of the forest. We took the long route and found it very rewarding.
All the paths are concrete so the terrain is not difficult although it is quite hilly with lots of steps. Here you become immersed in nature with lots of bird sound, great variety of trees and plants and everything is very well maintained.
Entry at €6 is very good value. There is also a small gift shop and restaurant although we did not eat here. The place itself was very quiet when we visited, we saw hardly anyone else in the two hours we were there so for a visit to experience authentic nature well away from crowds, this is highly recommended.
