Note: The Center is temporarily closed for building conservation through February 2016. We apologize for any inconvenience. The Yale Center for British Art is a public art museum and world-renowned research institute. Presented to Yale University by Paul Mellon (Yale College Class of 1929), the Center houses the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. The collection of paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, rare books, and manuscripts reflects the development of British art and life from the Elizabethan period to the present day. Works on view include masterpieces by Thomas Gainsborough, J.M.W. Turner, and John Constable, as well as artists from Europe and America who lived and worked in Britain. Perhaps its greatest treasure is the building itself, a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by architect Louis I. Kahn. Located in downtown New Haven, the Center is near many of the city's best restaurants, theaters, and shops.

The 4th floor is having very beautiful pictures. It shows how deeply the artists worked at that time to give the paintings a life. If you see them by just a feet you will not be able to identify whether they are real or painting....More

What a privilege to see these works. So many paintings by Stubbs (eight, I think)! Lighting is excellent.

The long gallery on the 4th floor is a must see, very reminiscent of English painting galleries and much more art is showcased than before. This is definitely worth a stop!

Excellent museum. So much to see. Wish I had had more time. They are very strict on time, so don't expect to go one minute beyond closing. Free admission. A definite must do. Even if you only have a small amount of time.

Great collection of all sorts of art for those interested. Information on each piece wasn't always easy to locate but definitely worth a visit if you have a few hours. Admittance is free.

Yes, as long as you do not use flash. The traveling art, that which is on loan, is not allowed to be photographed.
