An engineering marvel that's just plain old fun to watch! The bridge cycles surprisingly quickly, so traffic is really never that backed up when raised to allow the passing of a vessel - besides, there are plenty of local shops to pass the time. Bring your camera, and enjoy this engineering blast from the past!

We had only seen these bridges in books and online before our visit, but nothing really compares with being up close and personal! It must have been an amazing feat to install the 230 tonne counterweights and quite a spectacle to see them being installed in 1920! This is a lovely feature of Mystic that is a great attraction in... More

The most important thing to know about this bridge is that it goes up at 40 minutes past the hour, every hour in the summer. Locals plan their schedules around it.

We stayed in Mystic for the night and got to see the draw bridge open for a boat. It was a great sight to see especially if you have seen the movie Mystic Pizza. The bridge is in the movie for a brief moment, but its still cool to se in person.

The views from the bridge are beautiful but it doesn't open very often in the autumn and winter. Nice short walk down one of the banks but the shoreline going north was private property.

I was so lucky to see a sail boat needing to,pass under while I was walking along the river. This is the cutest city to go see!

Hearing the alarm, the bridge slowly raises on a pendulum-like pivot. This allows large and masted ships to go through.

We have been to Mystic many times and have seen this bridge all seasons. Most of my thoughts about the bridge revolve around the frequent traffic jams due to congestion. The surrounding area is picturesque and Rt 1 is just two lanes, hence constant heavy traffic and backups. It is nice to watch boats going up and down the river,... More

When in downtown Mystic people enjoy walking over this bridge to view the stores and interesting items on the other side. Besides the interesting engineering of the bascule bridge, you should read the plaque on the bridge that provides some details. Walking towards Mystic Pizza, stop by the bookstore and see the whale and submarine sculptures. Across the street from... More
