Don't go all the way. You can't do it without a jeep, probably w some modifications. But up until close to the falls base, it's very doable! Pretty drive, great views back into telluride and beyond. One shallow water crossing and switchbacks but not tight or too exposed. We parked when it got too much and hiked the rest of... More

If you have a jeep, do Black Bear Pass! The scenery is beautiful and you do not really appreciate the mountains unless you get into the heart of mountain!

This pass is a one way jeep road but a fun hike from town with waterfalls and great views. It takes a while in the summer for the snow to melt so check with locals before riding or driving over it.

I did this early season, early in the morning, by myself, in a stock a 4runner; and I pretty much don't recommend doing any of that. Early season can have high snow walls with a deep mud channel, lock those diffs! If you're by yourself around sunrise it might be a while if something happens and you need help. I... More

My friends and I had been planning the black bear pass for over 1 year. My wife and child were too scared to go with us so they stayed in Ouray and shopped. The black bear pass has the best views I have seen on all the passes. I don't think it is as dangerous as everyone says, but it... More

If on your own, note that this is a full-on 4wd road with significant exposure, i.e. if you really screw up you could die. Roll your vehicle down several hundred feet of mountainside, that sort of thing. But if you have the vehicle and experience for it, highly recommended. Precarious views, and the driving will grab your attention. I recommend... More

We went on a half day trip from Telluride over Ophir Pass and back over Black Bear Pass with Telluride Outdoors. Our guide, Roger, was great.

If you take the time to visit Telluride, one of the"must do" things (in the summer) is hike Black Bear Pass. The elevated hike can be done by walking or by a good 4 wheel drive with good clearance -lots of taller rocks to drive over. We walked from the main parking area up to the falls and back which... I've had the opportunity to ride motorcycles over the steep and exposed Black Bear Pass on several occasions, most recently in October of 2015. This is one of the classic, challenging pass rides in the San Juans. It starts out easy enough, climbing rough dirt tracks from Red Mountain Pass (The Million Dollar Highway). There are a couple of loose... More
