Closest real wild opportunity not too far from downtown Mendoza

I you can, by all means rent a car. It need not be a 4x4; just make sure that it has good clearance and a good engine. You will be climbing mightily. After leaving Mendoza to the North (this it the only time where it would be easy getting lost) one follows what looks like a never ending straight road. Soon enough you will enter a ravine. From there on, there are hundreds of switch back on a gravel road with the most spectacular views. This is a trip that is best done very early in the morning; you will be heading NW and then West; you want the sun on your back. Ignore the ruinous Hotel Villavicencio (take water and snacks). After you leave the hotel behind, the real trip begins. I am willing to guarantee that, assuming you follow the entire route all the way to Uspallataa, you WILL see guanacos. There is better that a 50/50 chance that you will see condors. Also, upon reaching the top of the switchbacks, on the place call the "Balcon", there will be a very photogenic fox. I have the feeling that the Chamber of Commerce placed him there for the enjoyment of the tourist. Very tame; do not attempt to feed him (that is what he is looking for). You will continue to gently climb until you reach the place call "Cruz del Paramillo". Here is where you will be glad you left early because the place will afford you glorious view of the Cordillera de los Andes, with Ansilta and Mercedario to the North, Aconcagua in the middle, Plomo to the immediate left and a string of volcanos farther South. I may have some of the names wrong, but not too many. I have done this road a half a dozen times. It has never disappointed me. In the descent toward Uspallata the highlights are the spot marking where Darwin passed during his trip with the Beagle (no Beagle here, he left it in Valparaiso). Further down you will come upon the most colorful arrangement of low altitude hills, almost upon reaching the Uspallata valley, and time for lunch. Enjoy a good goat barbecue in one of the multiple restaurants supplying the Panamerican Road. Head back to Mendoza on "Ruta 7"; do not drink and drive. I promise you will not forget the trip. '

I came back here after looking at the questions below. THERE ARE NO SERVICES IN THIS ROAD. THE LAST BATHROOM is in the ranger station by the Hotel. You must stop there if for nothing else to query the rangers on the state of the gravel road. What ever the answer is, drive slowly. Bring your camera!

Protecting water

I loved this reservation but it's better to visit it on your own so you can get to walk it through and through. Guided tours are too short. It features an old Norman style hotel, which was looted by the 1976 military Junta so you can't even go inside. You will visit its terrace and an adjacent colonial chapel. It's definitely worth going it's about 50 km from Mendoza city. If you're lucky as I was you'll come across some of the varied local fauna.

Iconic symbol of a healthy water

I loved the scenery. Being close to wildlife representatives is the best (I've been just meters away from a grey fox!). I hated not being able to spend more time in every spot (the drawback of being part of a tour group). It's worth taking a long calmed time there. The old hotel and its gardens are beautiful as well as the little chapel. It takes you back to the past glorious times of this complex. Take your time to admire the delightful "Last supper" fresco inside the chapel.

Lovely park on a sunday

Many families gather here. There are arts and crafts booths and opportunities for photos. Our amazing guide Marta Rued (m.martarueda@gmail.com) told us the history and took us to wineries and to the high andes- she is the best guide we have had in over 40 years of travel.

Take a bottle to fill.
Basically, this is a ruins of a hotel/spa. The famous Villavicencio water bubbles up from a spring. Take a few empty bottles to fill and you'll have sweet water to drink for the rest of your trip.

This place is incredible, you can see the old hotel as well as climb a pretty little mountain that will allow you too see the amazing mountains of Mendoza from another perspective, a lot of agencies take you to this place as part of the "Alta Montaña" tour, totally worth it!

Nice nature, hotel not so much

We loved the route to the nature reserve. Saw various animals, like a fox on the side of the road. We went on the dirt road but returned quickly after some fog came in. Bummer, cause the scenery looked nice. Easily to do with a rental car if you’re not scared of heights. The hotel however, i wouldnt pay the entrace again. It’s just an abandoned hotel with overgrown gardens. Nothing special to see there unless you’d be a big fan of the brand.
