The drive up from Chania to Theriso passes through the dramatic landscape of the Gorge with towering cliffs either side with shady tree lined river in the ravine. After around 20 mins you come out to the village which was the cradle of Cretan resistance to occupation. Drive further to the village of Zorvas and you can do a 3 hour hike into the high mountains. Breathtaking views .…

We decided to drive through this lovely gorge on one of our few rainy days in Crete. The drive is stunning and turned into a bit of an adventure when we arrived in a tiny mountain town that, due to large equipment that was blocking and repairing the road, was impassable. Fortunately we were able (thanks to GPS) find an alternate route down a very, very narrow road which eventually put us back on our route. The thrill of mountain driving!…

Each turn gives you magnificent views of the sheer mountains on either side. The drive is a must. The village is verry picturesque but shops close at dusk. We went into the gorge around 6pm in early October for an early snack and can recommend "Lumeri" for Cretan delicases. Quite a few gnats around dusk and they bite. Lovely scenery, not very busy. Amusing goats everywhere. Small selection of nice tavernas at end of gorge.

Most of the walks and gorges in crete are too long or difficult to do in summer. This suggestion is a solution! From the chania area take the road to meskla (there's a short walk to gorge sarakina meskla there but in 2019 it was closed). Then drive on to zourva with the views getting more impressive. Have a late lunch in one of the tavernas there eg rizinia taverna or emilias taverna both with great views. After lunch drive a couple of minutes to the east end of zourva where there is a layby to park your car. From there about 20yards further on there is an obvious path forking off to the right uphill. This path goes steadily uphill clearly marked. After about 30min climbing you reach a lovely rocky outcrop with great views. Then retrace your steps to the car. Drive on to Theriso with new more dramatic views. After theriso you then have the bonus finish of driving through theriso gorge which gives a good variety to the drive. Total loop only 90min + a break for lunch and the walk .…
