Rent a side by side ATV and point up to Animas Forks. It is not a difficult road, but not recommended for regular cars. The ghost town is well identified with stories of the structures and families that lived there. You will pass Eureka mine...More

We had a group of 20 on this ride to Animas Forks. We came back off engineer and found this little gem. Very neat place to visit. Trails are very easy getting here. We saw minivans driving the trails to this place! Kids loved it!

Animas Forks reminds always reminds me of how TOUGH the miners who lived and worked in this area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were! For the winter; I have the latest high-tech, light-weight, water-proof, and very warm, clothing. But the only 'warm'...More

We rented a jeep & another family member drove their personal 4 WD Toyota Tundra & Toyota 4 Runner. It is a rocky & rough ride. Really. It was WELL WORTH the money paid for a Jeep to have the peace of mind that we...More

It's a bit misleading to say this ghost town is near Ouray since the best way to reach it is directly from Silverton. If you continue on the same road you drove up from Silverton, it becomes VERY rough after a 1/4 mile or so...More

Awesome little ghost town near the top of the mountain! The trip up may be even more beautiful! Beware the roads are treacherous and hard on tires, best to get a guided tour or a rental off road vehicle downtown for the trip.

We rode ATVs to the Ghost Town from Silverton, Co. We had so much fun riding up to the little town that is being restored. You can go in the houses and see what their life would have been like. There are a lot of...More

I agree with Wayne C. Animas Forks is a historical sight, a cluster of mining camp ruins, a place to park your 4-wheel drive vehicle and use the primitive restroom facilities. Your closest airports are Montrose, Durango... More

Most of the vehicles we saw up there were SUVs of various types. We drove a Subaru Forrester up and we had no issues but we did take it very slow and careful because the road is pretty difficult. I wouldn't make the trip... More
