Description:

The Carousel of Happiness is Nederland Colorado's magical menagerie...

The Carousel of Happiness is Nederland Colorado's magical menagerie featuring 56 whimsical, hand-carved animals on a restored 1910 Looff carousel, turning to the music of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. Scott Harrison was a 19-year-old Marine Gunner serving in Vietnam where the gift of a music box and the image of a carousel in a mountain meadow calmed him. Many years later, after rescuing an abandoned carousel, he began carving what would become a whimsical menagerie. It took him a little over 26 years to hand-carve the 56 animals and a dedicated group of volunteers helped bring the carousel to life in the little mountain town west of Boulder. The fully-enclosed Carousel of Happiness turns to the music of a restored 1913 Wurlitzer Band Organ, and is home to a gift shop, toy store and do-it-yourself puppet theater. The Carousel is available for birthday parties and private events, and is fully accessible for people with disabilities.

Between the actual gentleman who resurrected this gorgeous carousel actually BEING THERE and telling the story to the charming carousel itself this place is a destination if you are anywhere near Nederland (Boulder and surrounding areas and definitely worth the trip if you are coming into Boulder for a day trip). The classic glass encased Wurlitzer is worth the trip... More

Usually we go through Nederland for skiing or hiking which is the main event. The Carousel is an excellent backup plan if some one forgot their boots and/or an excellent inducement if you need a kid to make it over one more hill to get back to the car. If all goes well, then it's just the cherry on top... More

The carved animals were awesome and different. The story behind it was amazing. Tickets were a dollar. We will definitely go again!

We had heard about the carousel and this was a nice Sunday drive from Denver. Nice carousel run as a non profit, they only charge $1 for a ride. Lots of animal choices, great stories about how it was created. The volunteers were terrific.

I was looking for a diner to eat breakfast at in Nederland when I came upon a surprisingly delightful attraction. The Carousel of Happiness is impressive and inspires happiness as well as honors and memorializes veterans. The Carouse was not open when I arrived but the owner and operator let me in to look around and explained the history and... More

Can I give this place more then five stars???? There is nothing much to say except: Worth the drive to Nederland. Don't go if you don't like to smile. After you visit, tell your friends as so many in Denver have never heard of this treasure. $1 per ride but you will want to ride more than once. Read the... More

It's handcrafted and has pictures on the walls showing you it's cool story. It's fun to ride and beautiful to look at. It has a great gift shop to. You should go if you can.

No matter what your age, a ride on the carousel will make you feel young again. The hand-carved fixtures are beautiful.

It's only $1 for a ride and this carousel is not just for kids--you will see just as many if not more adults riding it than kids. It's crazy to think one person spent 26 years making all of the animals on the carousel. And the music coming from the 1913 Wurlitzer organ only enhances the mood and fun.
