I went on a tour of the Matchless Mine this week. The guide ,Brenda Miller, was excellent! As a former miner, she knows what she is talking about when it comes to mining, and she gives excellent information about the mine, and the Tabors.

We were ripped off here earlier today with the only mine tour I've ever been on that did not include touring any mine. You pay $12 to look at a couple old junk shacks and a few little placcards about the mining that took place...More

We took an hour long tour. It is definitely worth paying for the guided tour to get tons of information that you would not get on your own. Highly recommended.

My wife and I took this tour (at her insistence) and I couldn't have been more happily surprised. The tour guide (Bill) was extremely knowledgeable about the mine operation, the area and the people that built it, and a great story teller. He (Bill) was...More

What really made the tour was the gentleman leading the tour. He provided a fascinating narrative of the mine’s history. This is not a working mine, and you do not go underground, but it is interesting nonetheless.

We were somewhat disappointed. The tour person seemed to have a canned speech. We felt this was not worth what they charge however with that said they do offer a self guided and there is no charge for that. I would prefer to pay for...More

There isn't too much to see here. You can take a guided tour for the history, however there is only two small "cabins" to see and pile of old rocks.

Colorado is crawling with old mine shafts and ghost towns that recall the history of gold and silver mining in the state in the late 1880s. Perhaps no site is more interesting than the Matchless Mine in Leadville. Located on East 7th Street, just steps...More

There is much history of Leadville tied up in the Matchless Mine and the life and death of Baby Doe Tabor. On the day we initially visited, we were told the tour guide, Bill Nelson, would not be available until the following day. Because I...More

The Matchless mine tour missed the opportunity to tell one of the many stories of how politics directed the economy and created as well as destroyed the town of Leadville through the Bland-Allison Act and the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890. Instead there are...More

I didn't see gold panning there, but there are many other places in the mountains where you can pan for gold. The Country Boy Mine in Breckenridge offers a tour into the mine shaft and gold panning afterwards.

Hmm, if your mother enjoys the history of "Baby Doe" and the Talbot family, she might be able to walk from the [unpaved] parking lot to the cabin where Baby Doe lived. It's all on one level. The rest of the tour is up and... More
