- Mike H.Marco Island, Florida6 contributionsFound Gold lolMy wife and I thought it would be a lark to do a gold mine tour as an adventure. We had no preconceived notions on how it would be. Thus, we went in with an open mind. To start this is not a working mine, but don’t let that stop you. Our guide Andrew was extremely knowledgeable of the history of the mine, along with the influences of the time leading to the mine being built, its opening and finally closing. So if you’re interested in mining and its history this is the place for you. We walked away with a good understanding and the hard lives of those that worked there. Our guide Andrew a licensed surveyor during the week was able to answer questions with ease and his lecture sprinkled with some humor kept all entertaining. The gold panning was a bit of a setup, but you learned how to swirl your pan and the kids in the group as the adults had fun learning.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- marielgvDavenport, Florida5 contributionsGold mine historyVery informative and interesting. The gift shop is nice and the employees are very courteous. Best to do it during the warmest months. We did on 1/13 and it was really cold, snow storm we had to walk instead of being transported on the van up the hill.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 January 2024
- AA1234Nashville, Tennessee12 contributionsArgo NEVER disappoints!!!Our winter ski trip always begins with a stop at the Argo Mine. We've done the tour before but now when we drive through we always stop to pan for gold and gems. This visit we met Erin and she was phenomenal!!! Erin knew everything about the mine/panning and then some. She worked hand in hand with the kids showing them exactly how to get all of the gold and gems from the pan and boxes. Not only is it educational it is FUN! I highly recommend everyone to visit the Argo Mine either for a mine tour or just to learn how to pan for gold (and keep what you find!)Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 February 2024
- Lauren B23 contributionsHistorical funWe had a great time on this tour! Our tour guide was awesome and so informative. The history of the mill and mining era was fascinating, especially how innovative this mill was in that time period! It was interesting to both adults and children, alike! And mining for gold is harder than you think!Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 July 2024
- patrick o1 contributionA fun and educational tourFascinating. I've wanted to learn more about the mill for probably 60 years. I believe our tour guide's name was Brianna. She did a great job. Informative and friendly. A rewarding and educational experience. I was wondering if there are any photos of the lake which was created by the 1943 blow out. I may have to take another tour before I check out.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 13 August 2024

Wow! Shelby made the experience fun and exciting. Our kids (17&19) were completely engaged and Shelby was patient and helpful. We traveled with another couple with teenage kids but also a younger one and every single person had a great time. Both families sons were completely smitten with Allie at the front desk, who was not only cute but super friendly and helpful. Thank you for making our pit stop between Denver & Jackson Hole super entertaining!

My comedy partner and I went to Argo to pan for gold. Our guide, Brandon, was awesome! He trained us in the proper gold panning technique and ensured that we found gold! Then, we panned for minerals too. We had such a good time that we bought additional bags and stayed longer. Brandon was kind, helpful, entertaining, and educational. Ask for Brandon!

It started as a spontaneous trip to Idaho Springs as we stopped to eat lunch in town on our way to the ski resort, and along the way we spotted the Argo! The website was extremely informative and it was very easy to book a tour online. Within the hour, we were touring. It was very cool to see how a gold mine worked! I especially loved the framed pictures along the way. Thanks staff - We very much enjoyed our tour!

Our tour guide Brooks was super knowledgeable and provided a comprehensive tour of the mill. We went in January so it was a little less busy and allowed us to spend time asking questions. The gold panning at the end was fun, but a bit cold! They also had hot chocolate in the shop to warm us up!

Went to the Argo Mill & Tunnel while on vacation and it was quite the experience. Alli gots us all checked in and briefed us before the tour. Brooks was our tour guide and was very knowledgeable on the details of the start up of the mine, the different tunnels and the preservation of today. It is an experience that anyone of all ages would be fascinated over.

Heading out of the Mtns toward DIA after skiing w a few teens, last minute decided to pull into and check out Argo Mine where we were met by a tour just about to start and it’s guide Erin who graciously and enthusiastically shepherded us into the starting tour. Erin’s energy, enthusiasm and insights immediately engaged the group with fun and fascinating facts about mining the Rockies and the Argo mine and various ways minerals and metals were found, processed and extracted. For littles to big kids, a fantastic way to learn about our nation’s history and the mine tailings and entrances dotting the hills and mountains of the Rocky Mtn towns and highways. Erin is an amazing tour guide.

What a fantastic tour. Unlike any other mine tour I have done. If you are like me and have driven by for years and never done the tour.... stop and take the time!
Excellent tour, Zack is well versed in the history and made it come alive with his stories, he clearly enjoys what he is doing. You could spend hours looking at all of the historic photos and memorabilia.
I highly recommend it!

I've driven by Idaho Springs so many times on I-70 and always been curious about the Argo. My husband and I were staying at the Indian Hot Springs resort and decided to finally check it out! The tour was great and our guide Kristopher was very knowledgeable about the mill and the history of it. It was very cool to finally see the inside and all of the old equipment in there! I would definitely recommend the tour!

Do we have to make a reservation, or can we take a tour, the day of/when we get there?
Written 29 July 2018
I would reserve to be safe. If there is room you can do a walk in.
Written 30 July 2018
Is this tour accessible? I have a mobility scooter.
Written 8 July 2018
I regret that we are not. We are a historic site with the feature of a 100 year ole gold ore mill of 5 stories. Our entry way is gravel and includes a history movie and panning yard. Our historic museum is adjacent to those areas but is 2 short flights of steps. The view of the historic ARGO tunnel, nearby the entryway to the ARGO MILL is laden with stairs.

Do you actually go down in the tunnel? Will I get claustrophobic?
Written 12 June 2018
Hell there. You walk into it, is a more accurate description. It’s a tunnel bored into the side of a hill. It’s spacious and well lit with a solid walking path. You will go 110’ in. There is a sturdy wooden deck outside that you can stay on if you do not wish to go in.

We'd like to pan for gold AND gems. Is this possible on 1 tour?
Written 27 June 2016
I don't think that gems are a part of the panning activity at the ARGO mine; just gold. Of course it's a simulated and staged activity meant to give the visitor an idea of the patience which was required of those who did it for a living during the gold rush. Have fun!

We'd like to pan for gold AND gems. Is this possible?
Written 27 June 2016
Yes, you are allowed to pan in the nearby river. They also teach you how to pan there at the museum with bags of sand that contain about 4 small gold nuggets.
Written 2 August 2016
I`ll be travelling from Denver to Glenwood Springs how long should I allow for this tour
Written 31 May 2016
The tour takes around 2 hours including the panning experience, which is included in each paid admission.
