- BriDeehan31 contributionsMagnificent. Not to be missed. This beautifully restored Chateau is simply too good to be missed. Full of family history and the Parkland is just like the Chateau, superb. The restaurant is of an equal standard with excellent food, service and location. You need to book it though. Rum tasting included with the admission price is a real treat with the choice of dozens of rums all created at a distillery within the Estate.Souvenir shop staff reflect all of those we met. Happy and helpful. The Chateau is a shining jewel of Mauritius and we will visit again.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 November 2023
- xavengerWindermere, United Kingdom117 contributionsBeautiful historic house and estate - superb veranda, gardens and cafe/restaurant on siteThis is a beautiful house in beautiful gardens, with a decent amount of history set out in the house about how it came to be, the family that built it and the estate both in the past and now. There are strong French and British influences in the house though most of the furniture you see in there is probably not quite what it would have been back in 'its day'. Great if you like looking around historic properties, great if you like looking at plants/flowers - and with the opportunity to try (and buy) some rum which is made from sugar grown on the site. We were there for about 2.5 hours, could have stayed longer but were struggling with the heat, because we hadn't quite adjusted to the Mauritius climate at that point. Good few hours out, recommended.Hello xavenger, many thanks for your positive feedback and for recommending us. :) Have a nice day.Written 14 January 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2023
- Judy2510West Sussex, United Kingdom17 contributionsReally interesting and beautiful chateau and sugar estateAlthough the day was thwarted by cyclone candice so it intermittently rained heavily on this visit, the chateau was beautiful and the explanation of its restoration was fascinating, the family story over several generations in and around the chateau brought the place alive. The gardens were lovely and trees offered some protection from the rain. The rum tasting area was busy and a bit crowded and the shop offers really good quality products, however these cost more than going around the corner to the quarter des seres shopping area still on the same estate which surprised us.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 January 2024
- Margaret6 contributionsHistory tour with expertise and smilesWe took a guided tour of the chateau with Purdy, starting in an underground tunnel in the gardens to see how sugar cane used to be processed there, then moving into the chateau itself. What a beautiful place - so well restored, with such attention to detail. After the tour, we had an excellent lunch in the adjoining restaurant, then spent another hour looking at further displays and admiring the views from every corner of the upstairs verandah. Purdy was a wonderful, thoughtful guide with a wealth of information about the fascinating history of the family and the estate. This tour was one of the best excursions of our stay in Mauritius - a big thank you.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024
- MELO1303Nottingham, United Kingdom29 contributionsThe rude waiter spoilt the visitThe chateau was beautiful and the information provided about the history and the film about the renovation were fantastic. It was lovely to wander around the house and gardens at our leisure because it was such a hot day. The ladies at the rum tasting were friendly and accommodating. The part that let the experience down was the rude and brusque server in the restaurant. As we entered the restaurant he came hurtling over to ask if he could help us. We told him we’d like lunch and he was so rude, pointing to a table out in the sun - there were other tables available inside. He basically ejected us from the restaurant as quickly as possible. It turns out that there was a conference on and the attendees were having lunch. What a difference it would have made of he’d have been pleasant instead of rude. Needless to say we left and had a delicious lunch 50 yards away at La TerrasseVisited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 February 2024
- Fearless14439781923Perth, Australia3 contributionsNice visitWe took bus 215 from Grand Baie and the driver dropped us a short walk from the chateau. The house was very interesting as were the gardens. Visited the turtles but didn’t do the rum tasting. We had lunch at a nearby cafe in the shopping centre.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 February 2024
- peter hPort Louis31 contributionsFully renovated colonial house in stunning gardens with lunch and rum tasting as optionsAn exquisitely renovated, Colonial House, set in beautiful gardens, was a delight to visit. What fabulous views the original owners must have had. A dramatic, tree lined driveway, beside a small chapel, led to the teak built house. With no corridors to trap heat, every French window opened out on to the veranda surrounding the house. Heavily polished floors glistened, tables were laid, wall coverings depicted deer hunting scenes, a study looked out on the gardens and sugarcane beyond. Upstairs a four poster bed was lost in a huge bedroom. A stroll through the gardens revealed coffee plants amongst many other labelled plants and informative signs. Lunch was a treat in the restaurant followed by a juice and jellies tasting ... or rum if you prefer. An excellent way to spend a few hours and enjoy a delicious lunch.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 March 2024
- MelAmunLausanne, Switzerland76 contributionsA splendid place to spend a half day in MauritiusFor me probably the best place to visit in Mauritius, you can re live history yet enjoying all the modern facilities all in a very harmonious setting and in keeping with nature and local culture. There is a lovely café surrounded by luscious plants where to enjoy a nice meal, a groceries shop that sells products made in the estate, a rhum distillery a boutique and a lovely plants nursery and of course the mansion and the grounds. Don’t miss the giant turtle! For the more adventurous (but not too much) you can get there by express bus 215 from Grand Baie and Port Louis.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 April 2024

Beautifully restored house and gives you a flavour of what it must have been like to live in the house. Not all translations are in English. Gardens we saw looked beautiful, cinnamon trees and four spice trees. Rum tasting was fun and very nice souvenir shop. I bought the pineapple and cinnamon jam.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 June 2024

There had obviously been a wedding the previous evening as all the tables and seating and wedding decor was still present. Beautiful old colonial building. Unfortunately there were no lifts and having mobility difficulties we were unable to go upstairs to look at the rooms there. Sat on the terrace outside enjoying the spectacular trees and the silence. A very serene place. Went to little cafe in grounds and enjoyed a local rum tasting. Good shop there with quality souvenirs.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 August 2024

We read wonderful descriptions online of the gardens and beauty of this place. When we walked through the gardens it was mostly large areas of lawn and large shady trees, not much colour or beautiful arrangement of a scenic garden.
The chateau is wonderfully restored and has some elements of the architecture and design from european buildings but somehow failed to dazzle and felt a bit dull and gloomy despite large windows and plenty of light.
We also bought the international tourist ticket at a high price and once in The chateau were told that the animal interaction facility and petting zoo was bot yet open leaving our kids very disappointed.
We did the rum tasting last, included in the ticket price, this was very enjoyable for some of us that do consume alcohol. Some great flavours and saved what would have otherwise been a disappointing visit overall.
We did not eat at the restaurant so cannot comment on that.

Very Bridgerton with a twist of Mauritiuian culture and island vibe. An iconic mansion with history and beautiful estate. You can spot some amazing birds here and visit the museum. Try the rum tasting and definitely get many nice pictures clicked.

The Chateau is an old plantation house in attractive grounds with many old trees. The house has been completely renovated and provides an excellent example of Mauritian architectural history. There is also a very interesting video presentation showing how the house was renovated as it appears it was close to collapse before the renovation was undertaken.
Attached to the house is a beautiful restaurant overlooking the house’s grounds. The food there was excellent, the service is excellent and the price very reasonable. It gave us one of our best days in Mauritius.

This beautifully restored plantation house is well worth a visit. Get your tickets at the entrance and visit the stunning gardens with a variety of exotic plants. Take a stroll through the grand house and admire the antique furniture, beautiful rooms and verandah.
Lots of history in this place.
You can have a bite to eat in the restaurant on site. Lovely decor and good food. The only negative with lunch was that the prawn soup, big portion was tiny! with 2 prawns!!
There is also a rum and jam tasting. You can pick one rum and will taste 2 types of jam. Not exactly a large variety. This certainly could be improved.

Comment se rendre au Château de Labourdonnais en bus de Trou aux biches? How to get to Labourdonnais by bus from Trou aux Biches?
Written 28 August 2019
i booked a cab driver for the day, I do not know if there is a bus that goes there from where you are. Cabs are negotiable so that might be something to look into.

I only ate at the restaurant, but I don't think they serve food at the bar, but I would call if you don't want to eat there. The people were very friendly and would probably allow you to take you around.

Cordialement Moeva21

What kind of trees line the road to the main building?
Written 5 November 2018
The giant trees that line up the avenue to the front of the Chateau de Labourdannais are called the Banyan trees, originally iported from Sri Lanka, and planted at the Chateau in 1847.

If i do the visit of the chateau, blind tasting, rhum arrange, treasure hunt and sorbet tasting what will be the total duration.
Written 4 September 2018
Hello Joyce C, the visit of the Chateau and the tasting can take up to 1.5 hour if you take your time and read about the history and enjoy the gardens and orchards. The Rum Making and Blind tasting activity takes about 30 minutes each. The sorbet tasting takes 15 minutes and treasure hunt about 45 minutes. Please note that these 4 activities are on booking only and for groups of 6 persons minimum. Thank you for your interest and hope to have you on our site very soon.
