Having passed the "Calico Early Man Site" sign a number of times while traveling the I-15, my brother and I decided that on this trip we would stop in and check it out. As we were the only visitors that morning, we were able to walk and explore the dig site at our leisure. The views from the top of... More

This is an active archaeological dig site. The digs are on the first weekend of every month. But you can always just pop in and walk around and see what exciting things they are pulling out of the ground. I would recommend taking a higher clearance vehicle as smaller cars may have difficulty on the dirt roads. If history is... More

One of the reasons we came to Barstow, did not disappoint! Now open on Saturday only 9-4, this is Feb 2016, wonderful Volunteer Chris greeted us, there is a self guided tour through the dig. Dr Leaky of the African early man site was a director for many years and described as a most significant discovery! There is a small... More

Really wanted to see this but it was not open. The biggest disappointment was the website quoted time it was open as did the signage along the road. The folks at the Desert Discovery Center in Barstow recommended this attraction. They were not aware it was not open. We did not officially find out it was not open until we... More

Had to stop, easy side trip to see a place where humans stopped to create hunting tools from the stones found in the area. Donations to maintain, excellent docent and bonus, Dr. Leakey (famous archeologist just so you know) once ran the dig site. Largest, active and oldest human remains found in the Americas.

I live close to this site and drove out one day. after reaching the end of the road. It looked like the geriatric club was having a meeting, and I'm almost sixty. I got out of the car and a guy with no shirt and shorts on asked, "What do you want" I told him I wanted to see the... More

WE were there about two years ago. We found this to be most interesting in a couple of ways. First because of the knoledge of the man in the office who shared a lot of information with us, and second because it is so non touristy. I don't think this spot is visited by many. The review titled (i've been... More

Interesting to anyone intersted in early man tool findings. Nice that its a self guided hike to the digs but its very basic.
