The area

Neighbourhood: West Hollywood
For years, West Hollywood has been known as a hub for the LGBT communities in Los Angeles. Today it still maintains the title, but has also become the “it” neighborhood for the entertainment industry’s up-and-comers. Producers, directors, writers and aspiring actors call this area home. Known for great boutique shopping, vintage clothing stores, home décor shops and fitness studios, West Hollywood is a grid of wide boulevards and narrow residential streets. The neighborhood also has a concentration of the most avant-garde restaurants in Los Angeles (rivaled only by the burgeoning restaurant scene Downtown). A trip to the iconic Sunset Strip, with its many clubs, music venues, hotels and flashing lights won’t be forgotten.

Had to go and sit beneath the portrait of Elizabeth Taylor in one of LA's classic gay bars. The place has a friendly ambience and has both indoor and outdoor spaces for drinks and food. Service was very good, the food was good, but the drinks were amazing. I ordered a New York Appletini and watched as the bar tender put it together in about 30 seconds. Ms Taylor and I were very impressed.

Such a great night out and would definitely go again. I’ve been a few times when in LA and each time it gets better. There’s seats to sit and socialise or great shows to watch and dance in the huge dance floor. Very good prices for West Hollywood.

Awesome complex (it's more than one bar). It's like the entire world has gone gay. I've never seen such a large gay bar in my life, lots of boys in underwear and eye candy galore. Worth a visit so you can tick it off your gay bucket list.

I visited this place many years ago and it was a very safe place for gays

I visited twice this week and it’s not a gay bar any more it’s a shame but I think it’s LA changing the wrong way

we also visited a few other “gay” bars and they should not be called gay bars either

Then you add in the second hand smoke and the pot smoke just makes you feel sick we only had one drink and left the drink was $23 for a scotch and a beer

It’s sad that gays have lost this place I wonder what the locals feel like

My friends and I have visited the Abbey literally scores of times over the past 5 years and it has gone downhill every year, in the past we could have recommended it but over the past year things have dramatically worsened.
Things which are wrong:
1. Terrible attitudes from the bartenders, staff and security personnel.
2. Extremely high drink prices, really ripoff pricing.
3. Tab minimums to stay seated at a table.
4. Staff constantly pushing drinks.
5. Many mistakes in correctly returning change after ordering.
6. No management staff available to handle complaints or receive feedback
To net it out...........we are no longer patronizing this establishment.

I used to live 5 blocks away from The Abbey and was a frequent patron from 2008-2013. I went back recently and it was clear that it had become nothing more than a pit stop on the TMZ Hollywood Bus Tour. It is now all 23-year-old tourists from near and far hoping to get a snap of a reality TV performer and crowds of loud, annoying bachelorette parties and "girls night out crowds" vomiting in the bathroom after a few too many vodka crans.

From the beginning, the Abbey was THE fun local gay neighborhood hangout and then as it became popular, it became the LA Metro and beyond gay neighborhood hangout. The crowd was interesting and fun and it had a certain energy.

Now it's all about 23 year old tourists taking selfies, vomiting and on the hunt for sightings of Lisa Van der Pump. No thanks - I'll pass.

Beyond that, the drinks are super pricey and the bartenders too self-important to give a sh*t about serving you quickly unless you are a hottie.

It not longer is a gay bar! It is unfortunate, now that it's a straight venue in the middle of West Hollywood, it's bringing a lot of the typical angst and aggression along with it. The bar tenders are mostly straight; the management has hired straight bartenders for a while, but now, with an over abundance of them, their lack of pride for the place is showing aggressively and really only cater to the many women who are there nightly. I observed as many of the dancers and wait staff only focused on the women, even neglecting their duties of serving the crowds and maintaining order, and getting drunk and disorderly. When this was pointed out to one of the bartenders, they shrugged it off and my colleagues commented on how the place is not living up to its previous reputation for being the "it" establishment. It was embarrassing, disappointing and quite sad.

A perfect place to relax, have a chat, a drink and fun!

Went there with friends and met a lot of people!
It is a very pleasant place, where you can relax and smoke in the garden!

Highly recommended!

Unfortunately it closes a bit early (2AM)...

Wandered in here on a wednesday night with my wife approx 7.30pm for a couple of drinks , having no idea about the place .One and half hours later we knew exactly what this place is - but overall we enjoyed the experience .If you like people watching , with some good music thrown in this is the place.Certainly some sights to behold ,and even if you're not that way inclined you don't feel in any way threatened or embarrassed and it is good fun ! We left approx 9.00 pm so can only imagine what it gets like as the night goes on ! Lively is not the word !!!!

This place never disappointing. The music as banging, and the crowd is always rocking. The drinks are strong and overall super fun. If you don't like LGBT.....prob shouldn't go. Otherwise, its a blast.
