Mare Island , seems like it could be such a great place but , it mostly has old rotted out naval buildings , not any water front and a great view from the Golf Course and driving range must be the best view of any driving range

I wanted to stay in Vallejo to be close to Napa Valley without paying for the costly hotels. Also, when I was younger and my husband was stationed at Mare Island, I had the opportunity to stay with him on the base for all bit. Back to the present, we got what we paid for. Even though the base has... More

Well let me start by saying I know Mare Island very well as an ex employee of the yard before it closed in @ 1995.From the industrial dry dock areas and buildings to the open spaces on the south side are worth a visit. There are new start up companies and schools now utilizing the yard you may see, and... More

The Mare Island Naval Shipyard and Museum is a hidden treasure. The island offers a nature preserve, scenic vistas and good walking but the Museum and the small Chapel are the highlight. The docent, Barbara, is professorial in her knowledge of Tiffany glass ( the Chapel), naval history and local lore. We left her tour feeling enriched and motivated to... More

Mare Island is a really interesting place. You can go there and see all of the buildings that were used by the Navy during war time. You can also see some of the original housing used by officers. In addition, the hospital is still standing. My understanding is that it was primarily an orthotics hospital. Now there are a number... More

The Navy gave the island to the City of Vallejo in 1996...The 515 ships built here are memorialized at the museums.. The Chapel and Victorian homes built in 1900's were built over the brick homes demolished during the 1896 earthquake.

If you're in the Vallejo area, looking for something to see and do, this is where you should be. The Shipyard boasts some beautiful examples of homes designed to house Naval Senior Officers, a bunch of industrial sites dedicated to construction of Naval vessels, including nuclear submarines, a very lovely Chapel with Tiffany windows, and a very well organized museum... The naval shipyard was closed in April 1996. there are several historical sites on the island worth seeing such as St Peters chapel officers row housing and the Mare Island museum.
