Gold miners first explored Moaning Cavern in 1851, but Native Americans had revered the site for centuries because of the haunting, moaning sounds coming from the entrance. Today, visitors enter by descending a metal spiral staircase. Or make reservations for an exciting two-hour Adventure Trip. Above ground activities: gemstone mining, gold panning, free nature trail. School program available. Open every day, year round. We try to maintain our operational hours at Trip Advisor.

The cave tour was great. Our guide was a young man with a good sense of humor who spoke really fast. He took us down to the bottom of the cave in stages, relaying historical facts as we went. Turned off the lights at one...More

Definitely worth a visit, even if you have visited caves before. This one has a 10 story spiral staircase, which is really cool and fun to walk down (and up - please note, while not super strenuous overall it is a 14-story walk up and...More

Driving through the foothills, we stopped to visit the Moaning Cave. Having visited this spot about 40 - 50 years ago, there was a big change. The old days we just walked in, paid a few dollars, joined a small guided group and descended into...More

Went on the cave tour today and don't know where to begin! The tour is relatively short and reasonably priced. I would not recommend it for anyone claustrophobic as the trail down is pretty narrow. It was definitely worth seeing!! We did the zip line...More

Warning: Do not go if you have a fear of heights. They have a spiral staircase that will give us acrophobes nightmares!

Our trip to Gold Country included short stops in Murphys and Angels Camp. We found our way to the Moaning Cavern and it was a delightful find for a hot Sunday afternoon. I wasn't quite prepared for the small spaces and the many steps up...More

This was an interesting place to see, I wasn't expecting the shear scale of the cavern. The access down into it wouldn't suit everyone, there are several hundred steps through a cramped passageway and then a spiral staircase but if you take your time it's...More

This is a quick tour but very interesting. Wear good shoes and make sure you can handle stairs. The site inside is pretty amazing to see. After, visit the little town of Murphys for a lunch. It is a quaint little town.

I did not see a height or weight or age limit but I think that there ought to be an advisory notice that it is not suitable for people who struggle with mildly stressful exercise. I had a similar issue some years ago at... More
