The building is a old jail, that was in use from the 1800's to 1964, when the county built the new jail next door. The building was the location of a missing... More

Preservation is one of the reasons I came here to visit. The Mother Lode of the Gold Rush was in Tuolumne & Calaveras counties, a unique area that played a major part in shaping our country. The Tuolumne City Museum is a treasure trove of exhibits tracing early Indian culture, agriculture, gold mining, & logging operations back to the 1800s.... More

Wonderful place with so many items of our history around here - and people to tell you about them! More things all the time, and if you want to research history of the Gold Country, this is a great place to start. Friendly folks running the place - very nice.

This museum has lots of interesting info about the gold rush of 1800's. It is in the old Jail House from that era. We happened to have a docent show us around and he had great stories of the people incarcerated there and the different techniques used for finding gold.

Didn't have enough time to spend here. The displays were interesting covering local stories and history of the area. Good mix of visual displays, reading, and hands-on exhibits. Hope to visit again.

This museum, located in the old jail, has a good variety of interesting exhibits inside the old jail cells. Free of charge and worth the 3 block walk from the town's Main Street.

This museum is off the beaten track of Downtown Sonora, but contains some beautiful history that I have never seen anywhere else. The guides are friendly and informative. A extra cool fact is that this museum is the OLD County Jail. The courtyard that was the jail yard has been transformed into a great place to sit and enjoy a... More
