okay, so i love historical architecture. it just really speaks to me. i pass this building regularly when i walk to my various haunts in the old town. the interior has the floor to ceiling built in shelves that you would find in an old grocery/mercantile space. it's been a crazy array of shops in the years i have been... The Ah Lewis store is very old and has been there for ages. The building is interesting as are the things sold there. In past years the Ah Lewis store was almost always closed, rarely open. However, just recently it has been open almost every day now. Well worth going in and checking it out. There is a bit of... More

The store is no longer Chinese theme, it is an event shop that sells wonderful things for weddings, birthday parties, etc. I wasn't even shopping for an event, but bought an adorable market notepad (magnetic notepad you can put on your fridge to list your grocery items). The building is a historical landmark and the exterior is untouched, still very... More

I attended a school just up the street from the Ah Louis store in the 90's. I saw a lady attending to the shop when it was closed. since then, I have never seen anyone inside of the store. As a local, I notice the building, it is well maintained, In my opinion the building looks just like it did... More

I'd say call to see if it is open, but when it is, lots of really nice gift items. My Mom bought some blue, ceramic Temple Dogs about 7-10" tall, beautiful.

This is one of the first asian buildings in Central California. As I remember the literature, it was the first Chinese store that catered to the workers that arrived here in droves in the 1850's, 60's and 70's. There were some opium activity going on there, where you could buy a place, some drug and a pipe...and just blissfully drift... More

The Ah Louis Store is a beautiful old shop that has been in SLO for many years and is part of a few Chinese buildings in the same area.

All that remains of the Ah Louis Store is a building and a plaque. Built in 1885 Ah Luis was a merchant and business man. My memories of the store from the 1970’s recall it being a store with odd imported curios. Today it is not a store, just a memory. The building was handed down from generation to generation... More

It is worth visiting the corner of Palm and Chorro streets near the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa for a quick look at the exterior of Ah Louis Store, the first Chinese store in San Luis Obispo County. Nicely maintained, the two-story redbrick building features a white stucco front with a greenish-blue color on the door, the window trim... More
