Least favorite tasting experience
Jul. 2020
Yes, the wines are very good. Our group especially enjoyed the Estate Pinot. But I give it a 'poor' rating as we did not enjoy the tasting experience:
1. Only three small tables on the sidewalk in the middle of the parking lot in this industrial area of town.
2. We were not asked how many tastings we wanted - she automatically poured 4. Considering you absolutely have to drive here, they should ask (as at other wineries) if anyone wanted to share a tasting, which are $20 each.
3. REALLY rushed. No chance to savor and discuss the wines, which were poured two at a time. "Oh, we close at 4:00 p.m." It was 3:10.
4. Asked if there was a chance to try their Albarino. NO. No other tastes available. Also unlike other local wineries.
We have been to 15 wineries over the past two months; this was our least favorite. Leaves a bad taste in our collective mouths.

Hello Robin, Thank you for venturing out and supporting small business in the time of COVID-19, we are saddened to receive your poor review. As you may know, wineries were closed for customer visits due to COVID-19 March to mid-June 2020. You made your on-line reservation for four tasters and visited us in mid-July 2020, mere weeks into a completely new, outdoor customer visit operation in our small, shaded area in front of the winery. Like all restaurants and wineries, we created an entirely new customer service area, ours being under the awning on the sidewalk – not in the parking lot - outside our winery and tasting room. If we could fit more than three tables, we would. We implemented a new reservation system for one-hour appointments, developed safety protocols, brought furloughed employees back to work and trained everyone in the new environment. Operating in the time of COVID19 and figuring it out like everyone else. Since reopening in June, closing again in November, and reopening again in February, customer response and support has been overwhelmingly positive through-out. Your review hits particularly hard, as we are one of thousands of small businesses who were closed for more months than we were open in 2020 - we are all doing the best we can with what we’ve got. The wines never disappoint. We have continued to improve our tasting experience, with new furniture, additional shade structures and longer appointment times. We look forward to being indoors again when restrictions are lifted.

Outstanding wines
Nov. 2019
Have been going to this winery for years. Outstanding Pinot Noirs and Chards. Should try Grenache and Zin, as well. Tasty and highly underrated. Pleasant and relaxed tasting experience. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Located close to downtown, a bit aways from Edna Valley but still close enough to combine tasting for the day

Don't let the location fool you; the wines are fantastic!
Jan. 2019 • Couples
Unlike many wineries located in idyllic settings and fancy buildings, Stephen Ross Wine Cellars is located in a plain-jane industrial complex in San Luis Obispo. But don't let this fool you: The wines are fantastic! Owner-winemaker Stephen Dooley specializes in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but he also offers rare specialties like Albariño and Grenache Blanc. On the red side, he adds Grenache and Petite Sirah. If his top-line wines are little above your normal budget, he has a line of reasonably priced Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and a red blend under his Flying Cloud label.

One of best Edna Valley wineries
May 2019 • Couples
Small producer, specializing in Pinots and Chards. Outstanding wines in both areas. Other wines of note are Albariño, Zin, and Grenache. Tasting room is often beaten path, actually in SLO. Easy to find. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

Nice wines!
May 2018 • Couples
After taking a driving tour of the area, we stopped in to do a little wine tasting. The wines were nice, the service was pleasant, and we were able to bring our dog in with us.

Very pleasant wines served by very friendly staff
Feb. 2017 • Friends
On a recent holiday weekend (February, 2017) 10 of us family members (without children) discreetly descended on Stephen Ross Wine Cellars on a late Saturday morning for a very pleasant tasting. In addition to the wines offered up for tasting we purchased a bottle of Alberino which we all tasted with ease and many of us bought more bottles of. We had the great pleasure of meeting the owner, Stephen Ross, and his wife (Paula?), who graciously took our group picture in their wine production area. A nice morning was had by all.

Very good Pinot Noir
Dec. 2016 • Couples
My grandson and I tasted some very good wine at Stephen Ross Wine Cellars. My favorite was the 2014 Bien Nacido Vineyards Pinto Noir for $42. My grandson liked the 2014 Flying Cloud Aviator, a red blend of mostly Pinot Noir and some Syrah, Grenache and Petite Sirah for $20. Very good service. Not very busy early in the day during the middle of the week. Located a few blocks off of the 101 highway.
