Overview
More
Crowland Abbey is steeped in history and legends. An abbey has stood on the site since 716 and some remaining parts date back to Norman times. The original north aisle of the monastery church is intact (now the parish church) and ruins of the original Nave enable the visitor to imagine its original splendour. Whether your interests lie in architecture, history, the church, or people you will find something here to interest you. Guides are usually available who will tell you of the history and stories associated with the building and an interesting visitor centre has recently been introduced. Self-guided tours are available and, if you are bringing children, let them try our children's trails/quizzes that will keep them entertained.

Visited at night in freezing January. I was surprised at how well illuminated it was! Very dramatic and the ruins offered good insight into how the abbey developed at various stages through the years. Great for architecture and history enthusiasts. Need to visit in summer.More

Yes please come during the day so you can see inside too. Guides are available between 11am and 4pm in the summer (3pm in winter). If you just want to wander on your own we have self-guides for both inside and outside, a variety of...More

Whether you are religious or not, Crowland Abbey is a ‘must see’ in South Lincolnshire. The Abbey nave is all that Cromwell left of a once important monastery. There is wonderful stained glass & an historically important alter screen. The bells are rung from inside...More

Thank you for your kind review. Yes the bell ringing arrangements are unique ... but then they are the longest bells pulls (we believe) in England. Volunteer guides are on duty from 11 - 4 in the Summer and 11 - 3 in the Winter...More

We started our visit by viewing the exterior and the ruin. The abbey is showing wear and tear but still retains it majestic character. The attached ruin of the abbey is so atmospheric you can imagine rolling ground mist to complete the picture. The interior...More

Part ruined abbey and part working parish church - the exterior is much more interesting and spectacular than the interior of the parish church. Huge graveyard surrounds the amazing ruins of the ancient abbey. Free to visit and well worth the trip.

Thank you. We would of course argue that there is much of interest inside too including a rare sarcophagus lid, an 11th century heart casket, a 13th C memorial stone etc etc. So glad you enjoyed your visit though.

I visited the Abbey and was carried away by the lovely views from the outside. I went to their recent flowers show and was astounded by the friendliness of the people.
