About
For decades quarter horses, cattle and cowboys roamed the grassy hills of the historic Kentucky Ranch. Today we are full of casual charm, reminiscent of California past and present. Since 2004 Thacher Winery with the grasshopper label, has been hand crafting wines from superb vineyards found on the Westside of Paso Robles and in Southern Monterey County. Our boutique production of Rhone blends and Zinfandels demonstrate local subtleties and true westside terroir. The award winning winery and tasting room are situated next to a 90 year old barn with spectacular and ever changing vistas of vineyards, hay fields and oak trees. The estate Zinfandel and Petite Syrah vineyard was planted in spring of 2007. Thacher Winery and vineyards celebrate everything we love about Paso Robles and are sure you will too. With such small production and distribution the best place to find us is in the tasting room and through the wine club. We’d love to share our wines with you and show you around. Artisanal cheeses and gourmet nibbles are also available to enjoy with some Thacher wine and make for a great picnic here at the ranch. Take a walk to the vineyard or share some of your lunch with the goats. We love it here and are sure you will too. Come taste with us, we are pouring!

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thatcher Winery is on the site of an old quarter horse ranch. My husband and I enjoyed a lovely tasting at an outside table. Our server, Chris, was friendly and knowledgeable. We liked all of the wines served. Good social distancing. Facial coverings worn by staff.

It’s hard to visit Thacher without commenting on the setting. The winery is an old cattle ranch and looks out over a small valley. It all creates one of the more picturesque settings in Paso. The wines here were very good for the most part, with some great and one or two we would have passed on. The tasting itself covered five wines, mostly reds, for $20. While we’d normally consider this on the steeper side for a tasting, we were also given tastings of four off-menu library wines on our visit, which made the tasting very reasonable. The service in the tasting room was fantastic. Both pourers were very friendly and informative, and really made the visit memorable. While Thacher won’t be an every trip winery for us, we will definitely be back.

This is a small little winery, would be a good idea to call ahead if you are coming with a big group. Wines were nice, but the wines and tasting are a bit on the spendy side for Paso. Server was pleasant, but not as informative as other places

Small winery and small tasting room, but great people and even greater wines. It basically is just a bar, and the owner (Seymour Thacher) conducted the tasting personally. His dogs were hanging out in the tasting room. Five wines were planned for the day's tastings, but when I and the one other taster present expressed an interest in some of their other wines, he opened those too. Fabulous personal service, great wines, and an in-depth conversation about wine-making and the philosophy behind Thacher's wines. Really enjoyable, and not over-run with tourists.

Their wine is very good. We enjoyed it but decided to reduce our wine budget.
DO NOT get on their wine shipping list.
My wife visited the winery on a girl's trip on 4/13/2019 and joined their every 6 month wine shipping program. Over $300 for 6 bottles. She called and cancelled a shipment prior to the shipment in September, 2021. She talked to Justin to cancel this shipment which we received a refund. She also requested that we be taken off the list. Cancelled? Nope!
Received a shipment in March, 2022 that we did not order and we were not notified about (or missed the notice) as we thought we had cancelled. Our first indication of the order was a box of wine left on the doorstep.
We tried to dispute via credit card. Not enough evidence apparently.
Then we called several times due to no return calls from Kelly to complain about the unwanted shipment. She explained that since we cancelled over the phone there was no record of the cancellation. We should have done via e-mail. Interesting this was not pointed out by Justin. And you would think a business organization could keep track of calls to cancel.
So this is either a scam or incompetence. In either case, we did cancel but have no recourse other than to pay the $300. We will enjoy the wine.
Postscript: Kelly offered to delete the $39 shipping charge. My wife e-mailed her to verify this refund. She tried twice to send an e-mail - both were undeliverable. Hmmm!
Buyer beware!!!

Visually a nice setting ( Old cattle ranch) but the wine was average. Tried to set up a group tasting and the person was no help.

We love Thacher wines! Some of the best wines in Paso! The family is very sweet and knowledgeable about their wines. The winery is quaint and they have a big barn for parties and dinners. We belong to their wine club too! Wines are reasonable.
