Walk Tours Are Essential To Learning About Palm Springs
We took two walking tours with the society: Rat Pack Playground & Golden Era Hollywood Homes. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. The tours were a good combination of architecture education & the history of celebrity life in Palm Springs. The distance covered was very reasonable and the terrain was very manageable. Would highly recommend their tours to increase your knowledge of how the city came to be and how mid century modern began to flourish.

    Great Historical Society Tour
My wife and I very much enjoyed taking part in the Historical Society's Frank Sinatra's Neighborhood Tour as part of our stay in Palm Springs. Our tour guide, David, was welcoming, knowledgeable, entertaining and very open to questions throughout the tour. We learned a great deal about the architecture, history and lore of the Movie Colony Neighborhood, and the movie stars, architects and historical personalities who made it famous. We definitely will participate in future Historical Society tours when we visit Palm Springs again in the future.

    Stars of the Movie Colony
This was an excellent tour for us. Our Guide / Docent, Linda, brought the tour to live with stories and insights. My wife is an old move buff and particularly liked the insights to the old movie stars. We both enjoyed learning more about the architecture and the landscaping was such a bonus. A great adventure. We will be going on more tours when we are here next year.

    Not to be missed
We rode the mid-century bike tour on what turned out to be a very rainy day. It was still great. Our guide, David, had so much information about architecture, history, personalities, vegetation, you name it. So much that we had not heard about before and really makes us appreciate Palm Springs as a community much more. We look forward to booking a few walking tours this fall when we return. The biking for this tour was easy and the bike shop folks were lovely. Highly recommended.

    Twin Palms Tour is Great
We booked the historical society's Twin Palms tour and really enjoyed it. Though this is a small group tour, we appreciated that they went ahead and ran the tour for just us two -- they could have easily cancelled, since we were the only people who signed up. Our guide (Tom) walked us around this great neighborhood, telling stories ranging from architecture to celebrity residents of the 1950s to what life is like for those who live there now (some of whom we met and were very friendly). It's just a fun way to spend a couple of hours walking in the sunshine and hearing great stories. Thanks!

    Enjoyable history
This walking tour brought to life the history of Las Palmas community. Our guide shared stories, facts and pictures about families. You learned about designers and architects that created the Palm Springs look. You’ll enjoy this stroll, have some laughs and learn a lot.

    Interesting Bike Tour
My husband and I took the Bike Like a Star of old time celebrity homes in Northern Palm Springs. Our guide, Paul, was very informative and chock full of knowledge and many interesting stories. He also talked about the architecture of many of the homes. It was an easy ride mostly flat with three small hills to climb. The pace was very leisurely. Even though the temperature started to rise to the 80's and higher by mid morning, it was still doable. We really enjoyed the tour, and we would highly recommend the tour.

    A must see!
Ruben was a Phenomenal Docent with a perfect mix of entertainment and education! Because of the knowledge he imparted, I enjoyed my stay in Palm Springs so much more. Steven was also very accommodating. This is a must see when in Palm Springs! A big thank you to both these gentlemen.

    Great Architecture
We took the Hidden Paradise tour of the Mesa neighborhood. It was excellent. There was a good range of architectural styles and great history in the neighborhood. Our guide was great at describing background, architectural features, and provided additional photos complimenting her tour. I would recommend this tour and look forward to booking any of the other Historical Society tours.

This was a highlight during our trip! I celebrated by 30th with family and coordinated a private tour. I selected the Rat Pack Playground tour in Palm Springs and it did not disappoint. I contacted the Historical Society a few months in advance and Steven corresponded with me via email and over the phone. The process was easy and I was able to modify the number of attendees even up to the day.
Roger was our tour guide and he was AMAZING! He actually wrote the tour and went above and beyond for our group as we had my 1 year old and pups join us. We had strollers of course but he understood and accommodated us by providing waters and umbrellas for us to keep cool. He was so informative with tidbits of trivia and catered the tour to our interests. Specifically highlighting the Rat Pack of course but also the mid century architecture. We got to see the homes of Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Debbie Reynolds, Cyd Charise, Kim Novak and the Elvis Presley honeymoon home to name only a few. We were able to stop and take pictures and he even gave us the address of Frank Sinatra's house (which is located in a near by neighborhood) so that we could see that too.
He was very nice and I loved getting to learn all about this lovely Palm Springs neighborhood and history from him.
Bonus, not long after our tour, he wrote a very nice email to me with more trivia and details about Sinatra's house that I was able to share with my group. Thank you Roger! I highly recommend this tour!

My husband and I try a bike tour in each city we visit - we find cycling is a great way to see the city and learn the history of the place we are visiting. Joe was our docent for the "Mid Mod Oasis" tour, this ride was 9 miles over 3ish hours. Small tour, ours had 10 people on it. Ride was fairly easy as Palm Springs is mostly flat, the city is cyclist friendly! The docent provided each rider with a an earpiece, which they then spoke into during the ride, and at local stops. The docent had a binder of history, with pictures included of local sites, insides of homes, etc. Our only suggestion for future tours would be to cover cycling basics (hand signals, single vs. double lines, etiquette of riding on one or both sides of the street). We have had these instructions on other tours and appreciate the safety behind them. If you love history, the outdoors and cycling, we would recommend this for you!

The regular tour schedule isn’t available until November so I called the Historical Society office and was able to book a private tour with the help of Steven. Only $40 each. Our docent, David, contacted me by email with directions for the meet up spot and to confirm length of tour - shorter or longer if we desired. What a fantastic walk! David is so knowledgeable about the history of Hollywood stars making Palm Springs their getaway home. He showed us so many examples of the mid century modern architectural style and the Spanish architectural style that make up much of Palm Springs. We even got to peek behind the gates of some of these beautiful homes. The walk is very easy, completely flat, no traffic. David kept us in the shade as much as possible but still bring water and a hat. Thank you David for a wonderful morning walk!

The Society offers a 2-2.5 hour bike tour through the neighbourhood of Palm Springs. Meeting point is 9 am, where you will be fitted to a bright yellow cruiser bike and sanitized helmet, courtesy of BIKE Palm Springs. A headset fits around one ear and off you go with guide leading the way.

Pros: First off, this was a lovely way to spend a couple hours and I am by no means fit. Most of the time is on flat ground with 2-3 spots that required some real effort to get up the inclines. The scenery is unreal. The guide was a local resident with a love of modernist architecture and he provided a lot of information.

Cons: On our particular ride, we were a group of 12 when 6 is ideal. Perhaps due to overbooking on this particular trip, our guide was not practiced at pulling the group together or catering to the people at the back. Sometimes he was up around the corner saying “over there is” but I couldn’t see what he was pointing to. Also, corners and distance impact the functions of the headset. The problem with 12 riders is that it is physically impossible for everyone to remain close to the guide. My only other “con” was the guide’s clear disdain for the architectural/land use decisions made by local indigenous people who own tribal lands within the city. Tours are a perfect opportunity to acknowledge those who came first and their contributions to the city that stands today.

Overall I would recommend this tour provided the spaces are limited. Also, the BIKE shop had good rental prices and e-bikes if you want to meander on your own.

Absolutely amazing tour! One of the best I've had. Jim was our tour guide and a wealth of information on Palm Springs, from history to his personal touches. You could tell he genuinely enjoyed what he was doing. My parents and I did this car tour and would recommend it for anyone. I had been to Palm Springs multiple times but had no idea of the history in the background and can't wait to hear more. To brag about Jim, our tour guide, more --> he was energetic, pleasant, friendly and just fun to be around. I also need to mention Kathy, who heads these tours, and was also a wealth of information and beyond helpful in finding us the tour for our needs. Overall, a great tour and a great organization. I look forward to doing more with them in the future!

This is a great tour. The pace is easy. Most of the route is very low traffic. Our tour guide, Joe, was informative and easygoing. The earpiece audio receivers work well and allowed Joe tell our tour of eight interesting facts about Palm Springs while we were riding between homes. The architecture is amazing and the anecdotes about their owners from Sinatra to Liberace are very engaging.

We did the Rat Pack walking tour and really enjoyed it. The tour was well paced and lasted about two and a half hours. The tour guides were welcoming and very knowledgeable and shared so much information about the architecture, the city and celebrities in a really interesting way. The booking process and directions and tour information provided was well done. We appreciated that we were supporting the historical society and highly recommend this tour!

Yesterday we joined the Celebrity Haven walking tour for two hours of leisurely walking through the historical Tennis Club neighborhood. A fantastic tour of architecture and celebrity history with sneak peeks into a couple historic boutique inns. Our docent, Dan, was terrific - knowledgeable, friendly, answering numerous questions… what a great ways to spend a morning, immersing one’s self in the fascinating history of this town and supporting a great non-profit organization.

On the walking tour, we visited homes hidden by gates and high foliage and the guide showed us photographs. We didn't see anything worth walking three hours for. The guide was lovely and had lots of information about all of these architectural gems that we could NOT see. Know before you go!

I'm sorry you didn't have a positive experience on the tour. I have heard that the "privacy hedges" can obstruct the views of some homes.

Incredible cycle tour of authentic modernist architecture of Palm Springs. Perfect weather and perfect tour guide. David was very knowledgeable. Stopping often to explain the different architectural styles, influences as well as some of their more well known owners. Definitely appreciated the focus on architecture as opposed to a ‘which celebrity owned this house’ kind of tour. Three hours few by. Would absolutely recommend this tour.
