We had a fun time driving around and looking at all of the beautiful houses. We did a self guided (aka Google search) tour of celebrity houses. The views of the mountains are really pretty and very cool architecture. Loved looking at the colorful and creativity of the neighborhood. Left the kids at home, they would have hated it, ha!

It can be confusing, but as a resident of Vista Las Palmas I wanted to point out the distinction. Las Palmas is the more eastern neighborhood, populated with larger individually built homes More of the estate variety behind gates Vista Las Palmas begins after you cross Monte Vista, going West. These are largely Alexander tract homes built in the early 60s and known for their mid-century mod design. They are the subject of films and tours. A MODCOM map is available at visitor center and hip shops. Palm Springs Modern Tours by Robert Imber give an excellent education So, if you are seeking a blast from the past and to see beautifully restored and preserved mid century homes, visit Vista Las Palmas

The best days of Palm Springs are long past, but the homes of the rich and famous from the 40's, 50's and 60's are worth the trip. Located just north of downtown Palm Springs these homes are easy to spot, especially if you download a map. Many are secluded, but some real unusual ones (Liberace's guest house) are easily seen. There are many more than Elvis', and the whole neighborhood is best seen by bike. These days, with so many for sale, you can stop into an occasional open house and see what they really look like from inside.

This is our second-favorite neighborhood in Palm Springs.

The grand old Spanish homes on huge lots probably date back to the 30's and 40's. It is quite traditional. Some of these homes sit on larger lots and are more grand than those in the Tennis Club District. It is quite far from the main strip action on Palm Canyon Drive.

Lily Tomlin's previous home is designated with a plaque here.

Then, when you transition to the adjacent neighborhood, Vista Las Palmas, the character and flavor of modern is alive and well here. Many homes have gone thorugh extensive revitalizations and the owners wisely stayed true to the architect's original design.

These are very beautiful homes on decently-sized lots (maybe not so large as the Tennis Club District) with a nice mountain backdrop. There are some contemporary homes interspersed among the classic 50's modern beauties.

Generally speaking, this neighborhood is further from the heart of Palm Canyon Drive's bustling activities. The pride is apparent when walking this neighborhood (so designated by the toppers on the street signs) and do watch for the historic plaques on the homes, telling you which homes were once the homes of famous stars. One of our favorites is Liberace's home: it so reflects his flamboyant personality. The large stone lions, statuary, white facade, low slung architecture and style are so distinct and grand.

The Las Palmas neighborhood is a good reminder that, in Palm Springs' case, "playground of the stars" was once taken literally. Nestled beneath the mountain in a lush garden of palm trees, jacaranda and bougainvillea, the neighborhood is a treasure-trove of lovely Spanish and mid-century homes that were the weekend getaways of Hollywood A-Listers in the halcyon days of the "Studio System." The former homes of celebrities such as Jack Benny, Marilyn Monroe, Tracy and Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Gable and Lombard, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Dinah Shore, Debbie Reynolds, Sammy Davis, Jr. and -- of course -- Liberace -- are all within a few blocks of one another and relatively visible from the street, as are several of the Mid-Century masterpieces that helped make Palm Springs a modernist mecca in the 50s and 60s. Detailed maps can be purchased at the Visitor's Center on Tramway, and are well worth it -- it's one of the best drives in town.

My husband and I have been to Palm Springs about ten times (we've lost count...) We make a point of walking around the neighbourhoods of Old Las Palmas and Vista Las Palmas on every trip. These two neighbourhoods are right beside each other so it is easy to see them at the same time. They are full of history including wonderful examples of architecture, whether Spanish or Mid-century modern. Also, many homes of movie stars from the Sinatra era are in these neighbourhoods including Clark Gable's and Carole Lombards' house, Dinah Shore's house, Liberace's house and the house where Elvis Presley spent some of his honeymoon. If you can, you should reserve a tour of these neighbourhoods. We went on a fascinating architectural/history tour with a historian called Robert (I forget his surname) several years ago and highly recommend it. Also, it you are in Palm Springs during Modernism Week in February, there are likely to be numerous tours/events focused on the residential architecture of the mid 20th century.

Basically whether in the car or on foot, just go and get lost window shopping for houses on this estate. Leading unto to Elvis' honeymoon suit along Cam Sur you will find some achingly hip houses that'll make you go running back to your boss asking for a pay rise.

Do respect the owners though as these are all residential houses most of which have Armed response to tresspassers.

I drove through here on my first day in Palm Springs and there is a whole treasure trove of houses from the mid 20th century to enjoy!

Lots of A-frame houses, some have an almost Art Deco influence, particularly the Raymond Residence with its dazzling aluminum grille units, and of course the places where famous celebrities stayed, like the House of Tomorrow which Elvis and Priscilla Presley rented for their honeymoon.

Several famous architects of the era like Albert Frey, Charles Dubois and Richard Neutra have all built structures in this neighborhood, contributing to its prestige. It’s definitely worth walking or driving around to explore!

A wonderful opportunity to see stunning homes that embrace marrying the past with new designs and landscaping. Some tours highlight previous celebrity residents, we chose to simply drive through and enjoy at our own pace. Stunning homes that you would only find in Palm Springs. We did not take pictures as these are private residences and respected the privacy of the homeowners. A great tour opportunity...maybe 30 minutes to see all homes.

This TA "Las Palmas" neighborhood designation is a melding together of the best of two distinctly different neighborhoods (the "Old" and "Vista"), which collide when the old Spanish style mega mansions abut the quirky Mid-Century Modern revivals. The neighborhoods try very hard to maintain their own personalities and the street signs have toppers on them to offer some direction to the visitors out there for a look-see.

This is an entirely delightful and architecturally rewarding walk; there is something special worthy of attention almost at every turn and at every entryway. If there was ever a rationale for why things are as expensive as they are, the eyes don't lie. It's really here. Or walks always bring us up close and personal with visually stimulating sights (nearly always devoid of obnoxious noise). It is just that peaceful here.

There may be a gate open by the pool guys which allows a glimpse of Neptune and nymph cavorting, or maybe it is an exquisite Spanish inspired gate, or maybe it is brightly colored flowers calling out to hummingbirds (and the rest of us), or maybe it is just the inspirational design of a really great mid-century make-over or re-do that breathes life back into a dying treasure in need of resuscitation.

No trip to Palm Springs is ever complete without a stroll through this wonderland of nostalgia.
