Great live theatre under the stars. Saw a wonderful production of George Bernard Shaw's "You Can Never Tell", a comedy & very well cast & acted. Some caveats though: you are outside, and it can get COLD, even in the summer. You can rent blankets. It's also quite a hike uphill unless you take the shuttle. Don't miss the dramaturg... More

This outstanding Theater company you cannot miss. It is not only incredible acting, but an event for the evening. Bring a picnic dinner and wine, to enjoy the summer evening before the performance, in the eucalyptus grove. Listen to the Dramaturge educate you about the play and its history at 7:15 p.m..

Nice venue to catch some Shakespeare. Easy to park or take BART to Orinda and shuttle over. Pleasant arena and friendly staff.

"Much Ado About Nothing" with males playing female parts and females playing male parts. One word summary: confusing.

We have enjoyed many productions here over the years, and the acting is always fabulous! The venue is gorgeous, but can be chilly at night when the bay fog comes over the hill. As with all modern Shakespeare interpretations there may be a regrettable modernization of scene and dress, so take your own preferences into account with that.

This is an amazing place to go on a summer night...you can picnic (bring your own or buy there), and sit outdoors under the stars and watch wonderful productions. Definitely a repeat performance place for our family!

A beautiful setting for an outdoor theater; all the potential in the world. Yet, every production I've seen there has disappointed. The last, Lear, was just awful. Shakespeare's most powerful tragedy...which they played for laughs. Terrible direction. This company consistently tries to "accommodate" Shakespeare for modern audiences and succeeds only in diluting and distorting his power. I've sworn off CalShakes,... More

Four of us went to the last performance of Shakespeare's King Lear, which happened to be the last CalShakes presentation of the 2015 season. I am giving the experience a higher rating than I might have if based only on the play. The setting is, of course, marvelous, with views of the Orinda hills beyond the open-air stage. We arrived... This is a wonderful location to see a play, especially with all of the new renovations. First of all, the setting in the hills is beautiful! The light on the hills as the sun goes down is stunning. Just be sure to wear layers and/or bring a blanket as it can get chilly once the sun is down. (They do... More

If you like open air theater this is the place for you. The productions always have a bent and the latest 12th night was fun and lively. Go early and bring a picnic lunch. They now have a bar and you can also buy food, but picnicking is a bit more fun.
