Exquisite solitude in Painted Gorge
Dec. 2012 • Solo
There are lots of great hikes in the Coyote Mountains Wilderness area, this one is the furthest East in the range. Pick up maps and get info on other BLM desert areas at the EL Centro Field Office, 1661 South 4th St. in El Centro or online. I recommend a higher clearance vehicle to get to the trailhead at the mouth of the canyon but 2-wheel drive should be OK. It's a beautiful hike up the canyon, plenty of interesting geology and you also may be able to find some fossils. This is an ACEC (Area of Critical Environmental Concern) so leave what you find. It is possible to hike some loops in the area so explore to your heart's content. Also in the Coyote Mountains is the Fossil Canyon area and the Fossil Ridge Trail, they are both excellent places to hike as well. The Yuha Desert south of I-8 is also a great place to explore on foot or in a 4x4. You'll find fossil shell beds and some interesting historic sites in the Yuha. If you go an a weekday you probably won't see another person in any of these places.

A great getaway
I have spent many weekends in Painted Gorge, near Ocotillo, CA. It is a very pleasant and relaxing place, albeit one with no amenities. There is no water, gas, or food for many miles. Once in the canyon, a 4X4 is highly recommended. The canyon begins at about sea level and climbs to about 3,000 ft. All but the last few hundred yards are drivable in a stock jeep. During the summer, the colors of the rock are the most spectacular, and often the cactus in the area bloom in spring. Winter and Fall are the best times to enjoy the canyon, as the temperature is usually quite pleasant. There are a series of mud caves that are fun to explore, as well as dozens of small canyons branching off the main one. GPS is recommended, as it is quite easy to get turned around. Soon, it all looks the same. there are numerous places where water has cut steep drop offs through the rock. During the spring, flash floods can and do happen. wonderful place to spend a weekend, and remember to pick up your trash (including brass cases) there is no trash service out there.
