This is one of the many interesting uptown Oakland attractions. It made up of statues of 25 different to honor people in Oakland and around the world who fought for peace, freedom and human rights over the last 150 years. The four bronzes inside are placed symmetrically on two sites framed by a gallery of little busts, bronzed and brushed. Global humanitarians next to local champions: Marcus Foster, Carmen Flores, Oleta Abrams, Fred Korematsu, Rosa Parks, Oskar Schindler, Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela.

Humanitarian Heroes. In a block size art park. Inspirational. All my heroes from the 20th Century from Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi to Ruby Bridges. On the back of the large sculptures of well-known figures are bas-relief of local heroes... A world-class monument honoring 25 humanitarians. The largest bronze monument West of the Mississippi River.
The Remember Them: Champions for Humanity Monument stands proudly in the new Henry J. Kaiser Memorial Park, in downtown Oakland California. The completion and unveiling ceremony will be held May 31st, 2013 at 3 p.m.. This inspiring larger than life bronze sculpture depicts 25 culturally diverse role models who have made significant contributions toward global peace, freedom and human rights over the past 150 years. See a list of the 25 humanitarians honored on Remember Them below.
"The Monument has been designed in four sections, cast in 60,000 pounds of bronze and will stand 31 feet high and 52 feet long. Sculptor Mario Chiodo, of Oakland California, has donated the design and sculpturing time. While the inspiration for this Monument existed for many years in the Sculptor’s mind, the impetus for the initiation of this work of art was the events of 9/11/2001. A New York City Fire Fighter was added to the fourth and final section of the monument in 2011 as a symbol of courage and dedication, and the City of New York provided a piece of the charred rubble to be included as a lasting reminder of this tragic human event, which was interred inside the fourth section of the Monument."
Local Champions honored on the Remember Them monument:
Joyce Taylor, Henry J. Kaiser, Mary Ann Wright, Joaquin Miller, Fred Korematsu, Dr. Marcus Foster, Oleta Abrams, Carmen Flores, Josie De La Cruz, Royal Towns, Ina Coolbrith, John Grubensky, Ansel Hall, Ohlone Woman

In a plaza in downtown Oakland that is an easy walk from Jack London Square, is a unique set of sculptures depicting humanitarian activists from around the world. The installation includes four gigantic sculptures, each 25 feet high, surrounded by a set of smaller head-casts of the activists that include their names and an inspirational quote from each. The bronze sculptures were created by Oakland artist Mario Chiodo and was dedicated in May 2013.
This would be a wonderful place for families to visit, particularly those with school-aged children, to learn about great world leaders from all cultures. Some of those depicted include Chief Joseph, Gandhi, Rosa Parks, Mother Theresa, Shirin Ebadi, Oskar Schindler, Nelson Mandela, Harvey Milk, Ruby Bridges, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglas, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and The Unknown Rebel of Tiananmen Square.
This is a spot not to be missed if you are visiting Oakland.

Parked in front of this last night when we went to see a concert at the Fox in Oakland. It's pretty huge. It's a surprise to see something so grand and carved out at that spot, especially since I hadn't heard of it before. I'd say if you're going to the Fox, you gotta check this out. It's just not something you see every day.

It's in Fox Square Park and you can eat at the line of mobile food trucks called Off the Grid. There are several really impressive statues of humanitarian figures, including several individual heads at low level, allowing visually impaired persons to touch and feel the faces of world figures and read their humanitarian statements in braille.

I was in the area again so I stopped by this outdoor art installation and fully realized that it is not all that impressive. But it is in the middle of a rapidly growing area, filling up with apartments, so lots of young people all around.

Despite the reviews placed on this object, all by the same person, you need to Google its actual location as it's not near the Lake Merritt Station at all. It's actually a short walk from the Oakland BART stop.

Outdoor modern art with some historic significance. Nice open space in a crowded part of town. Not really my taste in art, but you might like it.

A big outdoor sculpture set in the middle of new apartment buildings in Uptown, the hip area. As art, not so great. But a wonderful area. So drop by.
