Lake Merritt is a very pleasant area to visit and enjoy the ambience. For December 26th, the runners and walkers were out in full force along with the assorted varieties of birds - ducks, seagulls, geese, etc. It it hadn't been so chilly, we would have walked for a longer time but we gave it at least 30 minutes before... This lake is an amazing place to get a nice 3.3 mile walk in close to home. There is an abundance of bird life, and a great city skyline. This is a great place for sunset/sunrise or wildlife photography.

I've lived around lake merritt for 15 years and it NEVER ceases to enchant. whether it is the gardens at lake merritt, the oakland lawn bowling club, fairyland or just walking the 3 mile perimeter, it is so relaxing. i've seen stingrays, striped bass, flounder, jellyfish, and much, much more. oh and the birds! so many wonderful migratory birds in... On the weekend you can find people having picnics, playing instruments or salsa dancing. In the early morning between 5 and 8 there are at least 200 people walking or running around the lake. The weather is almost always good. On the north side you can explore the Lakeshore shopping center

Lake Merritt has a 3 mile path around the perimeter. Lovely trees, arches, grassy areas where people picnic. A great place to take your daily walk

One of the best things about living in the east bay.....lake merritt. I always feel so tranquil here. Such a diverse crowd that reminds you how we are all welcome. You can come with friends or alone and it's always great.

We joined a very knowledgeable Oakland Parks and Rec naturalist for an hour long walk along the shore of the lake to identify some of the various fall migratory birds in residence. If there is a "walk" available, we recommend taking it.

This lake is the quintessential urban running/walking experience. The distance around the perimeter is perfect for either beginner's routine or laps for a more seasoned person. The environment is always interesting and varies from side to side. It is highly recommended for a run, a walk, or any other type of leisure activity that gets you out and about.

Lake Merritt is the gem of the Oakland urban community. The lake is a tidal lagoon with a 3.4 mile heart shaped perimeter and can arguably be called the heart of the city. Lake Merritt is a refuge for all Oaklanders and visitors alike. It is the home of Children's Fairyland, the Oakland East Bay Garden Center, the Oakland Lawn... More
