The museum is not expensive. The top floor has exhibits that provide a history lesson on the Monterey area. Yes, you could just read about it somewhere, but the exhibits give you things to look at as well. On the first floor, there is a mechanism from a lighthouse that is interesting. Other than that, there are art exhibits that... More

This is a small museum next to the State Historical park in Monterey. It is a wonderful way to spend a few hours. There are 3 main exhibit areas: the atrium (where there was a great exhibit of photos of the bright colors of South America), a first floor exhibit hall (where the exhibit was of the life-sized whale photos... The museum was rated as one of the best in the world by the lady at the ticket desk so we paid our $8 each to go in. Frankly I would have been disappointed if it had been free! It is tiny, one room upstairs and a bunch of photos downstairs. There are 2 films showing in the theatre in... More

This museum was fascinating! The life size photos of whales were amazing and reading about how the photos were made was just as interesting as the photos . The maritime exhibit upstairs was extremely interesting and full of wonderful artifacts. The history of Monterey is so interesting. I would love to go back the next time I'm in Monterey. If... More

For the $5 bucks the best part is the lighthouse. Other than that, not much to see. I dont remember the art exhibit they had there but it was of missions.

This museum is just across from Fisherman's Wharf and only $5. I went to see the "Beautiful Whale" exhibit with some amazing lifesize photos of whales (there are plenty of benches so you can sit and contemplate what you're seeing), but as you walk in there's an exhibit called "Since Before the Moon Appeared: The Painted Legacy of Latin America"... When I went had exhibit on the 60s era & upstairs about Cannery Row from 1800s to Today, nautical fare, etc Museum could be bigger & house more exhibits & use Hi Tech to explain exhibits. Day I went they had a Dodge Chrysler car club in Town outside museum.

I have lived in monterey for many years and I never knew this was here. For $5 very interesting and worth a look. The staff was very nice and the man on the second floor explaining the exhibits was very passionate about his job.

Too expensive for what it has to offer. The computers were down when I got there so I had to pay on my way out. The computers were still down as I was leaving and the process of paying was way too long. The day I went they were setting up for the next exhibit so there was a lot... More

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our hour long visit to this small but worthwhile museum. The first floor had pictures and mementos of the Monterey pop festival of 1967 (we even drove past the venue at the corner of Mark Thomas Drive and Garden Road, outside of town) and the second floor had a variety of historical artifacts about...
