Neighbourhood: Downtown
Downtown Los Angeles is a busy metropolis of towering buildings, bustling streets, and industrial warehouses. There is a distinct multiplicity of cultures here with a growing influx of business professionals and hipsters. Many call the evolution of Downtown over recent years gentrification. New lofts, bars, hotels and restaurants are popping up regularly. Downtown is home to some of the very best restaurants in the city leading the LA foodie scene, plus it is the location of cultural and sports venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Staples Center, and the Coliseum at the University of Southern California.

- EdwardSanta Rosa, California3,016 contributionsGreat Old Market with Lots of FoodThe Grand Central Market is downtown Los Angeles's old public market. It is currently given over almost entirely to eateries of a great variety, many of which are quite good or excellent. There are a few holdovers, including a produce vendor, sellers of pins ans souvenirs, and there are merchants selling clothing, etc. We first went here may years ago and it has changed a lot since then. When we were first here, it was much more quiet and basically entirely devoid of tourists - but back then, as recently as 2011, downtown LA was basically devoid of tourists or the large crowds of affluent, hipsters, etc., that have moved in since then. Most of the eateries here now were not there when we last actually spent time here in 2011, although there are still a few old places which have been here for decades. It's a great place to go to choose from a huge range of things to eat or drink, do a little shopping and see a little piece of old LA, as gentrified as it has become notwithstanding.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 January 2024
- Jennifer R114 contributionsGreat place to eat and socialise. This is a great find if you’re staying in the area. It opens from 8-8 seven days a week and has numerous food stalls serving just about any variety of ethnic food you could wish for. Great vibe and is obviously used by the locals as well as tourists. And it has restrooms and a bar!Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 February 2024
- knowsnyc620 contributionsEarly dinnerWe walked over for an early dinner. Some stalls were closed, might be open for lunch only. There were plenty of choices, but heavy on Mexican. The crowd was young, 20s, and the music was LOUD. The McConnell’s ice cream was excellent. We took the funicular almost to the front door. Would I go again? At my age, no.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2024

The Thai style’s food and beverage tastes good. The staff of the restaurant is very kind and friendly. I really like my meal. Thank you very much.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 March 2024
- phvi2617Anaheim, California647 contributionsDowntown's exciting food hallA downtown institution since 1917, nowadays Grand Central Market is less a public market and more of a food hall with a bunch of different dining options. I've been to Lucky Bird (fried chicken), Fat & Flour (bake shop), and McConnell's (ice cream), which are all excellent. The Hill St entrance is conveniently right across the street from Angels Flight, and it's a short walk from either the Pershing Square or Historic Broadway Metro stations. On weekends it can get crowded, but there always seems to be space to sit down.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 April 2024
- Mary CLos Angeles, California282 contributionsMust Stop In Los AngelesThere is nothing not to love at Grand Central Market in Downtown Los Angeles. The parking is a bear, but other than that, it is just fun. It is a full market and also a place to eat. They have stands with all sorts of food, they have an eatery where you can sit down, they have every type of food you can imagine, especially Mexican food. It gets crowded but the crowd is nice and part of the fun of being there. The place is just so big. They keep it as clean as they can for such a big place with people everywhere. You can get things there you will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. They have a collection of chilis that is so big, many of which we had never seen. I had friends in town so off we went to the coolest market. They loved it. They have great sausages and sausage sandwiches. You can eat everything there, but you can take a bunch home and have great food for several days and you can shop there for all your market needs. Getting all your stuff to the car is not fun, but you will figure it out. Whenever you are in LA you must stop.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 April 2024
- JAMA29368 contributionsGreat Place to EatLarge marketplace offering many delicious things to eat. Everything from breakfast foods, fruits and pastries to sushi, Mexican food, and wood-fired pizza. I had a breakfast burrito which was large enough to share with another person. Also had a coffee from "The Donut Man" vendor which was very good, reasonably priced and came with a free refill.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 June 2024
- EvaBothell, Washington1,153 contributionsCareful, to many options might be overwhelmingGrand Central Market is a vibrant and historic food hall that has been a staple of the city since 1917. Located in downtown LA, it offers a unique blend of culinary delights, cultural experiences, and a bustling atmosphere that attracts both locals and tourists alike. Had not been there in many years and admittedly forgot how huge it was, with over 39 vendors, you can find a wide range of cuisines, from authentic Mexican tacos to fresh sushi, wood-fired pizza, and artisanal coffee1. Some popular spots include Eggslut, Ramen Hood, and G&B Coffee2. The market has retained much of its original charm with wrought iron fixtures and a lively, open-air feel. It’s a great place to soak in the history of Los Angeles while enjoying modern culinary trends. I stopped and got a beet smoothly and a Leberkäse sandwich which were both delicious.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 September 2024

Very good place for tourists and locals alike. It's got something to please everyone here, thai, chinese, sandwiches, tacos, seafood, drinks, smoothies and parking spaces and a cleanish ok bathroom. Lots of seating available - The back area has more seating as everyone tends to crowd the front parts. The groceries here are of course more expensive and there's a mexican shop selling spices of every kind possible. A very nice place to spend the day. Ques are usually at eggslut, villa moreliana and the korean place that i saw. Really recommend

This is a huge building filled with a wide array of restaurants, juice bars, and a few breweries to choose from. Taquerias are the most prevalent cuisine but you can find just about anything you’re looking for. It just depends how long the line is for what you’re interested in having. Best bet is to have one person order while the other looks for a place to sit which could take as long as it does for your food to be cooked. Fun lively loud place.

It might be sticker shock traveling to LA but I felt it was very expensive for stall food even though admittedly it was very good. Compared to similar type indoor markets this one did not measure up in size and selection of stalls. Nearby parking is convenient for the GCM and walking to nearby architectural sites. Quite a few on staff security were visible and certainly made it secure. Clean bathrooms on site.

I love to travel in Mexico. There, you go to a market for cheap but good restaurants packed with people, as well as vendors selling almost everything. Grand Central Market has the same vibe, and the same crowds of people, but the customers are mostly ones looking for restaurant food at LA's high prices. ($5 for a taco?!)
This is a great food destination in the historic part of LA that otherwise doesn't have (as far as I could see) a lot of good restaurants. Be prepared to eat standing up, though, because there isn't a lot of seating. (There are some outdoor tables on the Broadway side -- in the summer, at least.) Note that you can enter from either Broadway or Hill Street.

A quick trip to LA with the hubby, who was a first-time visitor. This is a great little slice of the culinary wonderland that is Los Angeles. The parking is the parking, so no complaints, but I was not in love with paying for the parking. Villa Moreliana has amazing carnitas tacos. Also, another dish to try is the chicharrones tacos. The hubby loved that spot, and then we ventured to the Oyster Gourmet. The oysters were terrific, with excellent refreshing rose wine.
Just walking around the market is crowded, but it is LA so the crowd displays the beauty of the diversity in the city. I am a history buff, so walking around a market that has been there since 1917 is impressive. The market gives the feeling of the Mercardos in Mexico City or open-air markets in Paris. If you have time with a group who all want something different, look no further.

A great selection of food to choose from. I walked over here twice during my weekend stay in DTLA, about a mile away from my hotel. So many vendors with great menus. Walked around a couple of times and finally made up my mind. I really wanted to try a few of them, but my belly gave out - was too full.
Connect to GCM wifi, it's free!
Oh, don't forget to check out downstairs, there were some handmade jewelry tables, vintage tshirts, organic candles, and a very messy mens restroom LOL
If you need parking, see below
First 90 minutes: $4
Each additional 15 minutes: $2
Daily maximum: $25

In the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, this food hall has been operating since 1917.
Open from 8am-10pm seven days a week, this landmark brings together the cuisines and cultures of L.A.
Diners are spoilt for choice and vendors including Eggslut, China Café, and Ramen Hood are popular options.
At lunchtime, people flock to Grand Central Market. It can be difficult to find a seat and queues get quite long, but it is well worth the wait.

We stopped in at 8:00 am right when it opened. Only a handful of food stalls were open at the time but it was still an enjoyable experience. Egg S|ut was open, the donut shop, there were two mexican vendors open and the juice shop.
There are restrooms downstairs. I definitely recommend this place for foodies because there’s a good variety under one roof. There’s plenty of seating. They have security guards at the entrances so it felt very safe.

The Grand Central Market is a must see if you are visiting Downtown Los Angeles. Parking is about 10$ and sometimes you can find street parking. The place is famous and has been here more than 60 years.
Whatever you want they have. They have grocery items, super hard to find items and a ton of places to eat. I have never had a bad meal here. We always go to one of the stands and get our food and eat it standing up near the stand, some have chairs, most do not.
They have a huge selection of Mexican and Spanish items, you want a pigs head, they have that.
They also have fresh fruit and great produce. You will love it.

Ok so Sunday all the places close early even though they say they stay open until 9. We got here by 3 and many places were closed! Also the coffee place that’s higher end and full service doesn’t have milk options. It’s whole milk or nothing. They do have oat milk but no 2% or skim. Also many places are we overpriced! Parking nearby is $10-$15 depending on day you’re going. The donut place is awesome and you must get the fresh strawberry donut. Also they have a authentic German sausage place with curry wurst

What’s the neighborhood around the Grand Central Market like?
Written 19 October 2022
It’s downtown LA. There is an attached parking ramp where you can park for $4 an hour or some length of time. The Bradbury Building is across the street as well as a Blue Bottle Coffee. The Angels Flight historic vertical railway is also right across the street on the other side. The Broad museum and Walt Disney Concert Hall are at the top of Angels Landing. LA City Hall is walking distance from World Central Market. The Last Bookstore is also within walking distance. I have been in this area three times and recommend.

How far is it from the Sheraton Grand? Is it easy to walk to it? Safe enough at night too?
Written 20 November 2019
Yes, it's safe, and you would bearly see no homeless people by that district before 10 pm. I prefer to drive or Uber especially when with family.
Written 20 November 2019

Is there any NEAR parking for cars with disabled parking placards?
Written 21 May 2016
Yes, but unfortunately Los Angeles does not have an electronic nap for you to easily find them on line. You will need to drive the nearby parking and look for the spots. They are easy to spot
