About
Pioneers of the California wine industry, Concannon Vineyard has a rich history dating back to the late 1800’s when James Concannon imported the “Mother Vine” from Bordeaux, France. Trailblazing winemaking innovation, Concannon was responsible for introducing America's First Petite Sirah® and breaking gender barriers in the wine industry by hiring the first technically trained female winemaker in the 1950s. An early leader in sustainability, Concannon helped pioneer the development of sustainable standards for winegrowing, and was one of the first wineries to receive sustainability certification. Concannon continues the winemaking legacy, dedicated to crafting sustainable terroir-driven, Bordeaux-inspired wines. Today, an estimated 80% of California Cabernet Sauvignon have originated from the Concannon Clones.

Friends took us here, as we were visiting for the day. The grounds were lovely. It was probably about 45 min. before they closed so we were going to have a quick tasting then probably go somewhere else. We got to the tasting room and stood there for quite a few minutes before the lady behind the counter informed us that they were closing soon and that the tasting counter was closed. She told us that we could get wine at the outside bar. We walked out to the bar and stood there and waited for the people behind the bar to even acknowledge us. When they didn't we told the gentleman that we wanted a glass of wine. The lady, who was also behind the bar, rudely told us that they were closed and that we couldn't get anything. Mind you, there was still about a half hour left. We told her that the lady inside told us that we COULD get some wine there. They tossed us a couple of menus then continued on to their hurried cleaning up. We picked 4 glasses of wine and went to take them to one of the tables on the grass. We knew we had little time, but we wanted to drink our glasses of wine until they closed. While we were drinking, the lady was RUSHING all the tables for them to finish their wine by going table to table picking up their glasses and telling them they were closing. The wine was already over priced for how it tasted, but I have never ever been to a place where they rush the customer to finish their food/drinks so they could go home! This was on a Saturday no less. We left vowing to never return.

We had a lovely time attending Twilight Tunes at this winery. Tickets were available on line. You arrive and select your garden seats and enjoy music. You buy their wine by the bottle or glass. They have food truck on site and you can bring your own food if you’d like. Their shop is also open for deli selections. We thought it was a lovely relaxing experience.

The wine tasting was very well organized with friendly staff and excellent seating arrangements. My only complaint would be the use of plastic glasses. For such a nice establishment they could wash real glass and help reduce plastic pollution.

We did the Livermore wine and food pairing trolley and stopped here. Great choice of wines we tasted. Loved their petite Sirah. Staff were great and knowledgeable about the history of the specific wines.

We enjoyed sitting in the grassy area and enjoying food and wine tasting. Concannon is a very nice winery in Livermore.

We absolutely love visiting Concannon. The Estate wines, the grounds, and the approachable personalities in the tasting room make this a destination worth visiting often. Most recently, we gathered with friends and celebrated a birthday under the pergola with a few bottles purchased in the tasting room. The vineyard is expansive and the tasting room is gorgeous. The special events are also worth every penny.

I've been to Concannon several times, but recently we organized a small family gathering there one Sunday. They are so gracious. We were able to reserve a picnic table for our group so no one had to arrive extra early to secure a spot. Great shaded lawn. There is an adjacent 'bar' area where we could purchase bottles in addition to the tasting room in the main building. Their wines were delicious.

My family and I stopped into the tasting room on July 25th. I am giving them two stars for their wines alone. Customer service was frankly, atrocious. I would give zero stars for customer service if I could. My sister wasn't feeling well during the visit, so she opted out of wine tasting almost immediately. She hadn't taken a sip of wine before she decided that she wasn't going to partake in the tasting.
We were served by Chuck, who seemed fairly knowledgeable about the wines upon initial introduction. However, it was apparent that he was more impressed with the group of girls that he was serving at the bar next to us, which was evidenced by the heavy-handed pours he was more than happy to dole out in stark contrast to the pours we were receiving. His general demeanor was anything but warm and inviting, which is pretty sad and inexcusable when you work in a customer service position in which you are forced to deal with people ALL day.
The icing on the cake was when my Dad decided to purchase two bottles of wine following the tasting. He purchased a bottle of the 2016 Mother Vine Cabernet Sauvignon and a bottle of the 2016 Nina's Cuvee Petite Sirah. At most distinguished wineries, tastings are comped or at least partially when you became a wine club member, or buy a bottle of wine. When my Dad asked Chuck about the winery's policy on compensation for tastings, Chuck was quick to let us know that Concannon only covers tasting room fees if you are a wine club member. I understand that Chuck isn't responsible for creating winery policies, but he is responsible for the condescending comment that came out of his mouth next...
Chuck had the audacity to retort, "Well I didn't charge you for HER tasting," insinuating that he was doing us a favor by not charging us for my sister not feeling well and choosing to sit the tasting out, even before she had ONE sip of wine. It truly is a shame that Chuck's lousy customer service and his brazen comments left such a bad taste in our mouths, as my family and I were largely impressed with the red wines we tasted that day.
Concannon should reconsider their policy on tasting room fees for customers who purchase at least a hundred dollars of wine, in the interest of competition with most wineries in the area.

This was one of the lines of an episode of "Hotel Impossible" from The Travel Channel featuring the makeover of the Purple Orchid Inn Resort and Spa in Livermore. I'm not a wine aficionado however I was ignorant to find out that Livermore had great wineries. Napa and Sonoma are known for wineries with their reserve vineyards where their wines aren't sold at grocery markets but at the wineries. I haven't been to a Sonoma winery. I like going to Napa but the drive from the East Bay to Napa is almost more than an hour and a half due to the traffic - as you get closer to Napa there is a one-lane highway .
I took the week off from work for the 4th of July. I thought about going to Napa during one of my days off. However I did some research on the web through SFGate, which had a link of Livermore wineries. I checked all the wineries from that article. The only problem was that most of those wineries are closed from Monday through Wednesday. There were only two wineries that were opened during those days. Concannon Vineyard was one of those two wineries. This past Tuesday instead of driving to Napa I drove to Concannon Vineyard in Livermore. I wasn't sure how the wines from the Livermore Valley would taste. I'll admit I have never been fond of the reserve wines from Napa as I prefer foreign wines while the wines from Napa have a strong aftertaste.
At Concannon Vineyard the wine tasting is $15 for six types of wine. The serving is a small shot of wine. However I felt if you purchase the wine tasting for $15 then you might be pressured to buy a whole bottle, which is about a little more than $30 a bottle for certain wines. Instead of doing a wine tasting I decided to order 3 glasses of 3 different types of wine. The wines I ordered were specifically from the Livermore Valley. The first glass I had was the Petit Verdot. I thought the wine would be similar to the aftertaste of wines I've had at Napa. I was wrong; the Petit Verdot was smooth. For the next wine I had a choice between the Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. I enjoy Malbec generally with its berry-like taste. I asked one of the bartenders what he recommends and he said try the Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignons I've had at Napa have a earthy taste. Another surprise as I enjoyed my Cabernet Sauvignon at Concannon Vineyard. The last wine I ordered was the Petit Sirah, which is the wine Concannon Vineyard is known for as they were the first to introduce that wine in America. Again another delightful wine I drank at Concannon Vineyard. Of all the 3 wines I enjoyed the Petit Verdot the most as I never had that wine before and I've had Cabernet Sauvignon and Sirah in the past before.
By saving over an hour of driving I was grateful for the experience I had at Concannon Vineyard. By drinking wine made at the Livermore Valley I was introduced to open my palette of other California wines that aren't from Napa and Sonoma. When it comes to California wine I can see why before there was Napa and Sonoma there was Livermore.
