Due to winter, the boat was covered with see-through plastic (a necessity to block the cold winter wind and icy water) and warmed by a heater in the middle of the boat. It was a very traditional experience where we had to sit cross-legged while...More

This is a great break from wandering around Kyoto. You get to watch the scenery go by without walking! It's easy to get there on the JR train and it's a short walk from the station. The boats leave constantly. This is probably NOT a...More

Our boat crew was apparently hilarious, but I can't say for sure because I don't speak Japanese. Four guys rotated jobs rowing/guiding us down the river with the guy in front as master of ceremonies. There was some physical comedy I caught and they did...More

Strongly recommend if you travel to Sagano by scenic railway, taking the boat downstream is one-of-a-kind experience. Traveled in Jun but I can imagine scenery will be the best during autumn.

From the JR Kameoka train station, it took us 10 mins walk to the Hozu-gawa river boat launch area. The sky was blue and the sun was shining down on us mercilessly as we entered the boat. We were made to sit in rows of...More

What a pleasant surprise to find this river boat ride in Arashiyama. Just the thing for a hot afternoon. I was the only English speaker on the boat, so couldn't understand anything that was said by the crew, but it didn't stop me from having...More

A brilliant way to spend a couple of hours – gently, for the most part, gliding down the Katsura river surrounded by some very photogenic scenery. I wish I understood more Japanese than I do, as the crew were real characters, and had the passengers...More

Our family of four took this trip in May 17. The weather was fabulous, and the scenery picturesque. The boat was a bit cramped, and some padding on the seats would have improved the experience. The guide spoke Japanese only, but we took the tour...More

Definitely, we took our 18 month old. They even have some space for a stroller if you have one. The ride is very gentle with only a few places you have told hold on slightly.

Japanese winters are usually blue skies. Why not explore the scenery? Just be sure to dress warmly! The water will not touch you unless someone sitting at the end of the row does not pull up the splash guard!
